How do I stay out of competition with myself?

Lets just say I have a site that has a blog built onto it.

example
boringsite.com/blog1

But I want to mask the url to something more seo friendly.

example
myawesomeblog.com

How do I keep the big G from penalizing me for my own duplicate content, putting my masked domain and my main site in competition with each other?

Someone said something about messing with the robot.txt, but I don't know about that.

Any way I can only let the big G see myawesomeblog.com , and not boringsite.com/blog1 ?

Nope, if Google's crawler can get to boringsite.com/blog1 it will be indexed. It would be best to just build the blog at myawesomeblog.com

In reference you could set the robots.txt file to not allow search engine spiders to index boringsite.com/blog1. But if myawesomeblog.com is forwarded or linked in some way to boringsite.com/blog1, when the spider goes to spider myawesomeblog.com it will see the robots.txt file says don't index and your site won't be indexed.

Really the only way you could accomplish this, aside from the above advice, is to have boringsite.com/blog1 content automatically duplicated at myawesomeblog.com and have the robots.txt set to now allow index at boringsite.com/blog1

Just some idea's, hope they help

Thanks, I will look into it.

Any other advice on this problem from sage webmasters
