How do I Setup HTaccess?

I'm confused on this.. I want to set up a HTAccess file to re-direct but how do I make it or set it up? Is it a file I have to manually make, is it a file I have to edit or what is it?

How exactly do I set it up or make one?

You can create your own - most ready made sites like WP, Joomla etc come with one.

if you use godaddy try the mod rewrite method instead of straight redirect

Make a file in the root of your web directory named .htaccess, and use the following text in it:

Redirect /myaffiliate http://www.myaffiliatewebsite.com

Now, in your posts or whatever, when you post the link http://www.mydomain.com/myaffiliate the people clicking it get sent to http://www.myaffiliatewebsite.com

I've created a text file and labeled it .htaccess but I can only see it if I view my directory through Filezilla.

Also, I'm using Host Gator.

Alright nevermind, I got it now.. I had to rename the file through Filezilla, I got it figured out now.
