I feel like a fool, but for the last 3 years my site has had the category in the URL. Example. site.com/category/title-of-article

I'd like it to be site.com/title-of-article

I know I can change my permalinks code, but is that possible to do without destroying all of the backlinking I have done? So any link that has the category name redirects correctly?

FInally, does all of this even matter for SEO purposes? will removing the category name increase my SEO impact?

If you have keywords in category name, keep it. The problem is you have to redirect all ur links to the new ones with htaccess if you want to do the change.
