Does anyone have experience with ranking a website in China or can point me to the right direction?

I read the hosting is a factor, you want to get your hosting in China. As far as domains, I've seen all kinds of different .watever ranking in baidu.

Ranking in China is a mistery, I think something like SEO doesn't even exist there, Baju is the most popular search engine!

In China, we mainly use Baidu for ranking as it is hard to access Google from here.

Actually, what I have noticed over the Baidu, that if you have many posts from the bboards they will be shown at the first places and only after they would show your domain. I have contacted some Chinese guys about SEO and I truly did not understood their scheme of doing it as probably SEO does not exists in China.

A wild guess but Google and SEO are almost non-existing things in China. What you can do is type in your keywords in Baidu itself and find out some blogs related to your website. then try commenting on them, that would pure relevant and Chinese. I did this for a Spanish site and got my site ranked up in the first page within a month. Just remember one thing while commenting- Translate every comment to chinese language with the help of google translator and then post your comment. Chinese forums might also help you out.

Yes you are absolutely right, China banned Google as they did not wanted to accept their terms of the propaganda going in there. So, generally, Yahoo is still got some influence, but the main search engine in China is Baidu.

There ya go: Baidu is your answer. SEO does exist - I guess you just need to go back to basics and start commenting on popular blogs. ALSO, while Twitter is non-existent, micro-blogging is HOT over there in China so you may want to look into it ;)

1)Baidu and Google is similar, but baidu prefer host in China.
If you want a good rank in Baidu, you firstly need a china host for your domain.
Actually, a china host domain need to be registered in goverment, this registration usually take 1 month.

    2) SEO is very important in Baidu.

    3) SEO strategies for baidu is different for google.

    4) I do seo for my company's chinese website and english website, and study seo for more than 2 years. :) Maybe what I said is not all correct, but they're all based on my own seo experience.

It helps if your website is written in Chinese and if not, have a translator installed that does automatic translations and caches the pages. This way, they can be indexed by search engines.
The automatic translations aren't perfect, but in most cases are good enough for Chinese people to understand.

you really need a chinease domain extension more so than chinese hosting. I'm playing around a bit at the moment and a .cn hosted in the states is beating a .com hosted in china hands down.

China is an emerging market for my niche and will be as big as all my other markets put together in 2 or 3 years. So I'm testing this well before I get my whole site translated and redesigned for the china market. I'll probably set up a "branch" there and do it all legally and correctly.
