I've taught my cat to do a trick. It's a really cool trick, and I am going to video it and upload to YouTube. It could go viral. How do I maximize my own financial gain, and prevent others from copying the video and using it on their own sites? My assumption is that you cannot copyright a homemade, short video. If that's true, how do you keep someone else from making all the money?

I believe all you can really do is monitor your keywords and file complaints manually with youtube. They will look at the posting dates and show that you posted it first. Just check it once per day,

Better yet, let people copy it so it starts to go viral. Then when it is getting tens of thousands of views per day across all the copies, file the complaints then. Then people will search for it and find yours after your copiers promoted it.

put a watermark on the video with your youtube username, and just upload that one. It will be the only copy out there so there is no copy with nothing in there

schwagoo gave you some good tips. Especially that people reposting and doing alt versions and parodies of your vid IS what entails going viral. Only thing you can do it monetize it to the max and be a the forefront of the tidal wave.

I thought of this. Is a watermark permanent? I would think a skilled person could erase it?

Make sure that you have your username or website url visible at all times when recording the video. Since you're going to plan the shot, ie. produce your video (as opposed to it being a candid video), you can print your username/website and use it as a background, so it's visible at all times and isn't removed as easily as corner watermarks (blurred, cropped or removed with video tools). Optional: Also use a nice watermark that isn't too obtrusive, and changes from corner to corner every n-seconds.

Just watermark the hell out of it. I've done that to some of my videos. Don't overdo it too much though, it will just make the video look like crap.
