I'm trying to rank a site for local businesses, but I'm kind of new to building links/making backlinks. How do you go about making backlinks for a site featuring local businesses?

For example, say your doing doctors, and you're using "(town) doctors" or "doctors in (town)" for keywords (exact), where would I look to make backlinks? Just search for doctor forums and blogs in general? How would you guys go about doing that?

Also I'm trying to rank for a few different keyword phrases. Should I write articles and submit them to a few directories with the keyword phrases in them? Or just keep backlinking with the keyword phrases I want as the anchor text?

Any and all help is most appreciated guys. Thanks.

Bro, your help is MOST appreciated!
Since I'm still new at making backlinks, I don't quite understand how and exactly where to make them. Do I just do a search for doctors forums and blogs in general, or locally, and post links on them? There's only so many different types of sites I can post comments and links on. How would I accomplish that? Thanks again.

I understand that, but I cant seem to find too much info on manually building backlinks. Someone else on another related thread also pointed this out. It just would help to learn from someone who already knows how to do it. I can learn a lot more that way than reading a thread anyway.
