Hi BHW. I've been lurking here learning for a while, and I'm almost ready to get involved in the community here.

But I need some help. I've learned to search for keywords and check competition, but one thing I can't figure out.

Lets take the longtail keyword "cheap bodybuilding meal plan" as an example (I know its only 50 searches per month..)

If you google this however, the top 10 results are all from authority sites and magazines, but non of them are targeting the exact keyword.

So my question: If not a single site on page one google actually targets a given keyword, but ranks for it, would this be seen as an EASY or HARD KW to rank for?

I appreciate any help :) Maybe some other members can use this advice too!

You could also check top 50 results if someone is targetting this exact Kw, and maybe is hold back by the authority websites.

Otherwise, imo, google is ranking these websites just because it has to rank something, if you will target this exact Kw, it should be easy ;)

SEO is something you just can't predict.

If the authority sites don't target that keyword then it is worth to give it a try to rank. There is no authentic answer whether a keyword will rank or not for a given keyword .

Thanks I'll be sure to check it out!
I already have Scrapebox, could I use this for keyword research? There are one or two guides here but they kinda outdated.

Make a multi-page, multiple post web 2.0 targeting the specific keyword. Do a small blast of backlinks, wait for it to move up the serps, see where it falls.
That way you will have a clear indication, as well as a quality backlink if you decide to target that keyword, or a related keyword.

Yes. You can use scrapebox for keyword reasearch.

Thank you for this. This seems like a very good way of testing competition, without having to waste funds on domains/hosting that might not even rank at the end of the day!

But if targeting the exact same keyword, wouldn't these compete with my authority site in terms of ranking ?! Or would they boost my site if used as a banklink?

I have now come up with a method of harvesting a decent amount of keywords with scrapebox, but how could I go around checking competition?

Allot of the scrapebox guides use the old Google Keyword Tool, which has the "exact match" parameter, but now the new Planner doesn't have this?

Also, does the amount of results in google for the keyword still play a role in competition? The old guides recommend targeting keywords with a very low amount of results, but it seems these days most keywords have results in the tens of thousands at least, if not hundreds/millions.

Right now I'm manually using the "MOZ Toolbar" to check number of banklinks and PA / DA of results in google.

It would be relevant, yeah it might compete, but if you build your site's authority, you will be 1, your web 2.0 will be 2, and now no competitor for the top spots.

I use LTP and Market Samurai for keyword research. This way your decision is based off of more than just what Moz gathers. Market Samurai uses Majestic's API and data from Bing. Using both tools together you'll be unstoppable (almost).

If you want to take it a step farther, run your top 10 results through Ahrefs to see what types of links they have. That's about as sure as you can get with this type of stuff.

Assuming you know how to read the data and optimize a page, you'll have a really high success rate with this approach.

I have just thrown "cheap bodybuilding meal plan" into Keyword Revealer and it returned a difficulty score of "23" which is low competition.

Obviously there is a lot more to keyword research than a simple keyword tool, but it is not a bad start. If no-one else is going after your keyword and you think you can make money from it then it is worth giving it a go.

If you see a page littered with authoritative, big brand results, you might be better off moving to the next keyword on your list.
