How do I avoid telling people I am a 'spammer' when asked what I do?

I have been going to some more local meetups recently and you get asked this all the time, it is pretty tedious having that same convo all the time actually. I avoid it. I find the more boring the person the more quickly they will fall back on the boring 'what do you do' routine. But it comes up sooner or later whoever you speak to unless they were some extreme liberal or something or you by chance hit on some really interesting hobby you are both into or something.

I at first say 'Internet Marketing' but often, since it isn't clear to the uninitiated what that is, they will question further what that entails. I usually still try and be vague with 'you know just advertise on social media and stuff' but they will still probe deeper wanting to know the exact steps of how one makes money from this. Ive found myself, once out of ideas for how to sugar coat it, ending up just saying I spam but I notice people find people turn their noses up a bit when you say this. Not that I mind the judgement really since people who would be offended by this are boring and closed minded anyway and so I wouldnt want to talk to them most likely but I find it is a nuisance in that it attracts yet more questions.

So how can I still deflect their barrage of questions? I have once or twice just said Im a dustbin man and they didnt have anything to say then :). I would do that again in general chat places but I am planning to go to some techy meetups soon so I will definitaly be talking tech stuff with fellow techers so I want to have a good cover story for a 'socially acceptable' explanation of what I do.

    Thoughts?

say you are contractually banned from speaking about it? and then keep your foot down and not talk about.

Say you work on getting IP addresses banned. This is socially acceptable as no one cares about IP addresses anyway.

Social media marketing is rather well-known even among those who didn't heard about other parts of internet marketing. At least that's what i would think.

If you cannot sum it up on your own, read the first paragraph: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_media_marketing. This pretty much covers the legit uses of social media as a marketer.

You can say that you promote products/services via FB, Twitter, IG ads (maybe they have never used these sites for anything other than the usual every day stuff, but you can easily expand on this) or you can say, that you manage accounts for companies, you don't have to mention spamming at all.

Self employed web developer. It's what I know best so I won't get caught off guard. As the conversation develops (if there's a sales opportunity) I'll talk about the other things I do as listed on my agency site (common service stuff)

As it goes I don't much like working on other peoples projects but I don't mind a bit of freelancing at times.

Truthfully though, I'm just an online entrepreneur like most on here - I don't say that simply because it gets weird and invasive.

I usually say "marketer" to the uneducated, explaining it as a way to market a specific product or w/e via social medias.
For educated one, there are many things to say in order to cover for your true identity, like a web dev, etc.

Never say "Oh I have a blog/site!" they will ask you for it, which may throw you in a whirlwind of unwanted questions. (learned it the hard way).

If it's family or a close friend I say "Internet Stuff". If its a random person, "Web Developer". Either way, it's the same thing.

OP, according to your recent thread you were trying to earn online for 6 years and failed to earn anything. You should just say you're unemployed as that is the fact. If telling the truth isn't priority, please make up some fancier job description, like webmaster, developer, content evaluator, beta tester. Choose anything that will be a dead end to convo.

Yes similar to the dustbin man.

Unemployed I think they get embarrased when you say that like they have a little pitying demeanor when you say that.

But as I say it is for tech talk occasions so I want to actually talk about what I do in these cases, just put it in a better light than spammer/porn uploader. Shutting down the convo would defeat the purpose of going to these particular talks. :) It is related to coding tommorow so I wanna chat about the coding related stuff Ive done.

Now I think of it when you look at mainstream business websites you see endless streams of bullshit they offload to explain what their company is about whilst never saying anything descreptive

'we offer bespoke tailered future focused design solutions for fuckity fuck fuck'

So maybe everyone is a spammer covering their tracks :D
