Never done this before, so I'm guessing that just asking won't do and I'll have to offer something in return?

How can I ask for a backlink and what can I offer in return besides the information my link would provide? Is there a formal way to make the request?

What have you offered in the past for a backlink?

how about a 3rd "strong reputable" site? you can always "bloat it up" with some nofollow crap to get the "metrics shiny"..

The proper protocol would include having content that is worth linking to. If your content has no value and doesn't help the users of whatever site your want a link from, be prepared to shell out some money (which is against G webmaster guidelines).

    Examples would be:
"Hi, I have this really useful tool on my page that will help your community/visitors in this way"

    or

"Greetings sir/madam, I wanted to let you know about this really entertaining piece of content on my websites. Here is a link to my Google drive with images, bullet points, and a boilerplate in case you'd like to write more about it."

or just go to the BST and fork over $300-$1200 depending on the domain. But you could invest that in great content and then distribute it yourself in order to get way more links.

Another option is to have your own network of publications you have authorship on, and then you can basically trade links back and forth (again, against G guidelines).

Start off nice and "whitehat" by getting to know them. Talk about similarities in interest and site content. Make a point of mentioning possible guest posts, sponsored content, etc... Keep batting the conversation in that direction.

1.) Some will only want a guest post. This requires a site that is already decent...

2.) If they seem like a nasty lil' writer, they'll be coyly mentioning something something please give me a gift, blah blah my expensive lifestyle this... or they may be hungriest of all and directly quote you. (some writers make a living on link whoring, just learn to gauge how direct they are, hint the self righteous ones)

2.1.) If it is a blogger without a pro reputation use their main domain's email. If they are a pro writer they probably check their linked-in more often and are already in the mindset of accepting offers for $.

3.) Make sure it is a contextual link placement and they aren't making your anchor tags look artificial. (make your anchor tags look natural and fairly random)

PS: Mostly it is a process that not even the best of the best gets 100% of the time. For now focus on making action towards a specific end. Even if you accidentally deindex yourself, you'll learn a lot and there are still ways to promote a site. (PPC, SSM, etc.)

I didn't expect creating Backlinks would be easy, but right now it looks really complicated.

It's either offers for dollars or a little luck plus awesome content. If I was to choose I would take the first route because luck is not always on my side.

Dude, I messed up my first few sites and messing up was what taught me more than anything else.

I understand it is scary and intimidating to take action when you're uncertain. But it is THE BEST(Proper) WAY FORWARD.

    Ok?

You should make a test site or consider your first few sites as experiments. Just try all sorts of things to get backlinks and test the effects. There are plenty of guides on here that will enumerate how to do this further.

The only right thing to do is to experiment as much as possible. It is the only way you will penetrate through the BS. Action will give you so much more understanding. If you just take action for a few months straight (like the intensity that people play videogames) you will be amazed with your progress :)

Usually you will have to pay for a sponsored article with backlink.

If you are a good and recognized writer, and offer for free your services, you can get a backlink.

You need to have content that's worthy of being linked to or pay the website owner for a link. Ideally, invest in a really good piece of content as that can get you more than one (and is a one-time investment).
