How did all these internet marketing dudes and chicks achieve "guru" status?

I mean the ones with huge traffic to their websites ever day.

Was it GREAT product launches? Millions spent on PPC? Guest blogging on other guru websites?

Basically how does a guy/gal go from nobody to all of a sudden have 50k uniques per day, speaking to huge audiences on teleseminars and in person getting sheeple to pay $5k per seat?

I mean you have to start somewhere.... so where do they start?

Get a website and launch a product? Or just get to know all the other gurus around you and have them promote you first and THEN make a website/product launch?

I can figure that Shoemoney got big because of the photoshopped adsense check going viral.

I cant figure out anyone else.

    Especially people like this

The interesting thing about the Marketing world is that Guru's brand themselves as such. Just like "Mad Men" branded the name themselves. Build a product, brand it, brand yourself with some freebies, over a high-level JV compensation for the sale of your product and bam

1.yes I think they're are real gurus but I dont think They sell anything.those guys have real skill.Like coders.Website owners,Hackers.to me they are real gurus.

what we must understand is - how many people really know abt making money on the net.If someone doesnt know and you tell them you can make $100 000.it will seem like amazing and you have secret info.buts its not really secret.

I think the difference is a real guru has real web skills and can create an idea.

others just sell old ideas and info

There are gurus, and there are pioneers.

Pioneers are the people who are trying new concepts and figuring out how they work best. They make their money from actually putting the concept into action. The methods they perfect eventually become common knowledge, usually after the idea has been played out and is no longer as effective.

Gurus are typically not pioneers. They take the knowledge, repackage it and sell it. They usually make their money from the concept itself, not the action of putting the concept into play.

There are many gurus, but few pioneers.

In fact, many of the people on this forum are potential gurus. They have a vast amount of knowledge about HOW things work, but little experience in actually putting them TO work. The only difference between the millions of would-be gurus and the relatively few big names (the "Gurus" you ask about) is largely a matter of self-promotion.

People tend to take for granted the knowledge they possess. They spend hundreds of hours reading ebooks and browsing forums, and all the time they are soaking up knowledge like a sponge. But we discount that knowledge because, after all, it's freely available to anyone. So its not worth much, right? Wrong. To someone new to the often-confusing world of Internet marketing, you may be almost God-like in your level of experience and understanding.

Here's my proof... how many times have you bought an info-product from one of the big names, then gone through it all and realized you haven't really learned anything new? You already had the same knowledge as the product author (the Guru!) had. There are only three main differences between them and you:

    1. The guru is comfortable selling the idea because they do not take for granted the information they possess.

    2. They got off their ass and wrote the ebook, recorded the videos, created the spreadsheets, and did whatever was required to make the product.

    3. They know how to promote their product, or at least how to outsource the copywriting and so on to people who do.

Gurus are only gurus because there are idiots following them. You ask them about their products, all they will do is direct you to their ebook...but have they ever made something magnificent? No is the answer.

They talk a lot of crap, crap that you might think will turn into cold cash, but in reality you're just pocketing and fuelling their ego.

Only guru who did kind of make it was shoemoney, but still he talks a lot of crap. The real guys are the ones who made their own stuff big such as the Epic guys (I know both of them)

gurus become gurus by simply calling themselves gurus. as simple as that. it doesnt mean that they are actual experts on internet marketing, it means that they are acting like experts. im sure most people right here in BHW are much more knowledgeable then these so called "gurus" which are just morons

Long time ago, few shrewd internet marketers with skill-sets ranging from mediocre to moderately-skilled came together and formed a "You a Guru, I too a Guru" club! They decided that they will write some ebooks, for example, and each one will promote those books on the internet.

For the sake of comparison: They at that time did the same 'great' job of 'writing great authority books' especially on IM-related topic as the bulk of present-day writers you see on WF and DP. Each one called the other a "Guru" (a master on the topic), and as the pioneers in 'scaming' unsuspecting members on various forums with providing glowing reviews on their "works of inventions", they made themselves (i.e., each other) the Great IM Gurus! :D

Most such Gurus are only bluffers and make their money only in the above way -- by promoting each other's 'work of great excellence' before others get the chance to promote them.

Some of the replies on this thread are correct and some are
    partially or completely wrong.

Here's my take on how to achieve "Guru" status:

First, don't call yourself a guru. The idea is to have OTHERS
call you a guru. The way it is done is as follows:

    1) Establish yourself as an authority in a particular field/niche.
That is done by creating products and holding free seminars,
podcasts, building a list, etc., and constantly being VISIBLE
    to your target audience.

    2) FAME BY ASSOCIATION: Contact the established gurus in your
field and ask if you can do recorded interviews with them. Then
make those interviews available to your target audience. Those
gurus are almost always open to the opportunity of showing-up
any time and anywhere they can. It furthers THEIR promotional
    efforts.

Also, become an active member of the guru's forums/blogs and
seize the opportunity to show up at their live events. Talk with
them, see if you can get their phone number, build a strong
relationship with them. After all, they are people too.

    3) Promote the guru's products to your list and make sure that
he/she KNOWS you are doing it. Eventually, you can ask them
to promote YOUR products to HIS list, thus furthering your
    authority/credibility.

The way to GET there is to BE there. So make sure you are
hanging out with the EAGLES - and not with the TURKEYS.

And last but not least, it's all about your name. Your name
is your BRAND. It is a product in itself - and the more it is
seen and mentioned, the more success you will achieve.

Then YOU TOO WILL BE A GOO-ROO!

    Here's to YOUR success! :)

    "Wiz"

...sucker in a bunch of people at the WF. Then they delete all the negative press about you. I'd say it's as simple as that. ;)

Another definition: A Guru is the one who knows the Skype ID of the best copywriters (and the freelance writers - best of course) on the internet (Fiverr nowadays:D), AND the sellers on WP, and still doesn't know the ins and outs (sh!ts, in short/s) about the rocket-science method(!) they both 'invent' for him.
