One of my forum competitors ranks 1 & 2 in google for the same URL - how is this?

Also they have a vbulletin board and the No 1 link also shows the sub cats in the google results giving a detailed listing- how does this happen, is it SEO, forum software?

This is not my forum area but a similar report can be seen for P1 Rank 1 if you search "football forum" on G with the top site also having sub cats shown - is this normal for when you hit no 1?

Double listings in Google for the same keyword aren't too hard to come by. If you have one page that ranks well in Google, you can easily build another page on the same site that does so as well. For example, say you have an article about 'dog food allergies' and it ranks on the first page, you could build a second article about dog food allergies, and link the first article that ranks well to the new article using the anchor text, 'dog food allergies'.. this will pass a lot of juice to the new article, possibly giving you a double listing right out of the gates if the keyword competition isn't too strong.

I have a fair amount of them and I get them by building sites around related keywords and then backlinking both the keyword specific page and the main page. Say you have five related keyword pages on your site. Go 80/20 on the links, building 80% of your links for each keyword to the targeted page and 20% to the main page. Since the main page is getting a lot of related keyword anchor text it can rank for all the terms. A lot of time both the targeted page and the main page will rank close enough to double up.

Sometimes they end up on separate pages and you end up having to link one of them a bit extra to get them together. I have one of them now that I am trying to fix. They were at #2 and #3 but the #2 went to #1 and the #3 dropped to #11. Annoying but I have started hitting the one at #11 a bit harder to bring them back together.

Yes, you can internally link to other pages that are relevant to the keyword you are trying to rank for. A little trick you can use to see some potential pages to link to on your own site, is to just type site:yourwebsite.com 'keyword' .. that should bring up all the pages that are at all relevant to the keyword in question, and you can internally link to them with the keyword as the anchor text.
