How do background check sites provide their data?

    How do background check websites provide their records? As far as I know, most these sites only give you access to public information that can already be searched in county records, etc. Maybe some are more in depth and can do more, I don't know. But you enter a name and then it searches what exactly?? There's literally thousands of records databases maintained by local, state, and federal government agencies. How does it search them?

    Just wondering the nuts and bolts of how these sites actually obtain the data it returns to the user. Any info on this would be helpful.
