Building a site for a client and its hosted on our server while in development, however the other day noticed it on around page 10 for its main keyword, odd thing is though its hasn't been submitted to google, there are no links pointing to, no site map etc, etc; so how did google find it?

I was always under the impression you had to submit your site to google, or have links pointing to it so google can find the site, and you often read about people having trouble getting their sites indexed and then this one just appears there in google in a couple of days.

May be your site has a blog which must have automatically pinged your site to pingomatic.

And if you have bought a domain from registrars like Godaddy, you will often see a parked page - those pages get indexed in Google, may be because of Godaddy wants them to be indexed. I have also noticed the Google verification files placed on my server hosted by Godaddy, even when the site was new and I had not added it to webmaster tools.

no blog on the site, just raw html.

The site is hosted on a our companies separate domain, that only hosts our we sites underdevolpemt, not on the clients domain.

DXSEO, you still have mis understood slightly. There are no links for this site, as it currently being built.

if you have your robots.txt set up, or your webhost has an autoupdating sitemap of the domains hosted it gets indexed

Submitting your site to Google is just another type of scam. He is right, Google crawler is searching every where.

It could be that your company made a communication and the domain name was included in the content. If such content contains the full url of the site and put in a directory of another site, Google will later crawl that directory content and discover the new domain name. That is another way Google finds a site and crawls it. If you do not block a private area of your site from Google, it will be crawled.
