How did Facebook evolved into a BILLIN DOLLAR EMPIRE since 2004?

Always wanted to have a discussion about this with like-minded people who understand the Internet and how it works, hence decided to make a topic on it.

The Social Network movie shows us how Zuck made Facebook from his dorm. But Mark Zuckerberg, in reality, said in an interview that making Facebook was not as easy as it was shown in the movie.

I am wondering that during 2004 there was myspace, Friendster, Orkut and a couple of others maybe, so how did Marc exactly manage to make it so viral among people that all the other social platforms became the shadow of facebook?

Within just 10+ years he made it into a BILLION DOLLAR company and he just started it from his dorm room with a laptop and couple of friends? And do you all think he stole the Facebook concept from those twin brothers?

And in the movie, it was shown that he hacked into college computers to get email addresses to mail them about Facebook. To which extent do you all think that's true? Guess that's why email marketing is so powerful lol.

Just because of stupid people around the globe. They did nothing, just destroying generations.

My jelous self: Luck and backstabbing

The rational reason: Good business plan, good idea, good marketing, good target audience to start, good maintenance, good improvements etc.

If you wanna make the "next facebook" you need something unique. Look at snapchat, instagram etc all pioneering their field despite facebooks lead in social networking.
It's all about ideas with a twist.

But it was none of those rational reasons. He sat in his room and said lets make a website, before that he tried with a hot or not type website. He didn't have a plan, marketing, etc.

I think your first reason is more accurate. He got lucky and used unethical or even illegal activities to make it more popular.

Extracting emails and letting them know about FB. No wonder why email marketing is popular. xD

I wonder what if GDPR hit before 2004. What would have Zuck done? :p
But GDPR only applies to EU right? and he was in the USA lol

If we're going to talk about what's more impressive, I'd argue that the creation and growth of Snapchat was more impressive than that of Facebook. It came out of nowhere and became a billion dollar company in a shorter period of time than facebook I imagine.

What it started off as just an idea then it grew big and escalated from there to the rest. It was a pretty unique idea back then.

Or I'm talking about him lying to school governers to get access to student records, uploading profiles of students to facebook without permission, faking statistics and so on.

One was for music
The other for students

And then the rest differed.
And 75%+ of its users now and past had already graduated should show it wasn't the idea which made it a success.

It wasn't really a unique idea back then. There were already 300 or more social networks back then.
Facebook got so big because they gave/give government agencies access to their user data.
So these agencies helped and still help Facebook to grow and grow. The bigger the better for them...
I thought everybody knew that by now.
