I am planning to eventually help a family friend with his SEO. As of now I'm just trying to learn as much as possible. I made a thread asking how I should charge my friend. Most people said "it depends on the competitiveness of the keywords." Is there a tool or a website that shows how competitive certain keywords and certain phrases are?

Dont take this to personal, but your talking about charging someone to do SEO work for them yet your asking how to check the competitiveness of kws? Something don't make sense.

Google keyword tool will show you if the competition is low medium or high. What I do is manually check the backlinks and page rank of the first 10 results with ahrefs

    Look up Keyword Research Tools.

Oh and BTW, you shouldn't charge your friend to do this.

Do it for free, it's your friend and you have no idea what you're doing yet.

How would you feel if you got charged for a task by a person that had no idea about what they were doing?

In return you are learning and gaining some experience.

    Don't get greedy, you're already at a Win/Win

When I said "eventually" I meant months from now when I actually learn enough to do a good job. I'm not out to scam anybody. Step one is learning, right?

Yep step one is learning. I would advise you to purchase software like spyglass etc.
Then start doing some of the tutorials and find out about the competition.

May be then people should charge you for giving out this piece of info too, hope your friend comes across this beautiful forum , he may get what he wants , the way he wants.

    Is he really your friend?

And you should never try to sell something till you are pro in it!

No offense but I dont like your outlook, if you are doing this to your friend even without having enough knowledge about it.
