How can PBN from new domains without any backlinks be so powerful?

I just finished an extensive competitor analysis. He ranks #1 for a highly competitive keyword for almost 2 years now.

Of course he has build his own PBN with at least 30-50 domains, like everybody else on the first two pages. What stunned me, however: He did not build his PBN from expired domains. All domains are NEW (ok, meanwhile they are 2-3 years old). They did not have ANY backlinks when he started. And what is even more surprising: Most of them still do not have any backlinks. Some have a bookmark, probably to get indexed. 70% of them do not have one single backlink. Tier2 simply does not exist!

So this guy made it on #1 in a real elbow niche with this:

    • PBN of 30-50 websites from new domains without backlinks
    • some directory listings
    • a few bookmarks
    • a few press releases

    Thats it.

How is that possible? DonĀ“t we need expired domains anymore?

It's probably not from a PBN. He could be doing something else. Most PBN sites would probably have a higher domain authority than 0.

Yeah like above, he could be doing things you can't see.
I see guys in the top ten in my niche with absolute fucking shit back links. One site from a completely different country that is irrelevant.
    Boggles my mind sometimes.
I swear sometimes guys just get lucky and rank high. can't be me ever of course lol.

It sounds more like they're using PBNs and blocking them from crawlers such as AHREFS, Moz, Majestic, etc. If you try to look at the backlink profile of my money sites, you'll hardly find anything, but I assure you it's not just random luck.

Could be, but you have no idea how competitive the niche is.
The one in my niche definitely isn't using PBN. I honestly think people jump too quick to say it's a PBN. We're only a small group of people that actually use PBNs, the general public and general site owners don't even know what that is, nevermind hiding it as well.

This is what it sounds like to me, especially as OP is saying the domains are 2/3 years old.

OP, how did you carry out your extensive research?

I also agree with this too, just because people can't work out how a site is ranking, they immediately jump to the conclusion that it must be using a PBN and that isn't always the case.

I am pretty sure that he gets his juice actually from the described PBN sites and that there are not so much hidden sites in the background.

Reason is this: He uses keyword anchortext in the backlinks. After penguin everybody is careful with his anchors, so why would he waste the money anchors for the no-backlink-PBNs if those would not be his powerful backlinks?

This is where 'pretty sure' becomes deceptive - you're just assuming. You have absolutely know way of knowing if there are hidden sites 'in the background', regardless of how extensive your analysis is.

If you looked at any of my top rankings, you would see something very similar to what you've described here - little to no apparent 'power', yet the sites rank and keep ranking. It's not magic. It's design.

I dont know for sure that is right. But I gave a good reason why I make this assumption. If your niche is about "buy viagra online" would you waste your most powerful anchor for backlinks that dont count?

I have a pretty strong brand in my niche and 90% of their links is from directories and link exchanges. It's frustrating sometimes.
I'll go do the same and get penalized lol.

Most likely your competitors will come and go as they are doing it churn and burn style , why dont you make some similar sites and try the same strategy as them ? (spamming the shit out)

That is what i do when i see new sites ranking over my authority sites (not so) , i just buy a few domains , set them up real quick (helps to be a programmer) and spam as much as i can (mostly outsourced)

Like I said, it's a strong brand with millions in sales (their own product in brick and motar and online). I get the impression they are 'trusted' so won't get penalized.
But you're right I always buy domains intending to do that, but when the time comes, with all the time spent on content and designing the sites I hate to 'waste' them.
