    Hi,

I am wondering how can I get a visitors IP?

And I mean , I need to trace it to like real location. Within a mile of his location.

Most scripts just provide the city and then ISP.

But I would need something that would trace it more accurately..

anyone who has a solution let me know.

    Got it from ehow

Once you obtain the ip address, you can get their proximity or ISP by do go to the following website http://whois.domaintools.com/{IP ADDRESS} for example: htt://whois.domaintools.com/192.168.0.1.

2Once the result is retrieved, you now have the information of the country of origin for that IP, the proximity location and their ISP/Organization name that own the IP.

3Try calling the ISP listed in the website and if you are (very) lucky. You can persuade the CSR by giving out their name or address. If you only can get the email address or username, that's good too, you might be able to contact the person and have him/her reveal their physical address.

4If the above step doesn't work, you need to contact your attorney and have them get a subpoena, court order, or warrant to pursue the ISP to give out the information. You need to have a valid reason to do this though (ex. scam, sexual predator, harrasment, etc). Be prepared to shell out couple hundred dollars to do this.

5Some ISP doesn't keep log of their IP assignment, they usually just give out random IP from a pool of available IPs to their customer whenever they logged-on. However, if they do keep log and you know the time when you first encounter the IP, you might still be able to trace and find out which customer using that IP and that specific time.

You can't get closer than that. In fact it could be entirely wrong city too, depending on how the ISP stuctures their IP address pools. This is especially true if it's a smaller city, because in those cases it usually shows to the nearest large city.

Only thing you can do is take the issue to police or to court and get them to subpoena the ISP, in which case they will find the owner from billing details. Of course in that case he needs to have done something illegal that warrants a subpoena to ISP.

I think the only way would be if you contacted his ISP directly and had a legitimate reason with court documents forcing them to give the info out... (they wouldn't just give out personal information because you called and asked). You aren't going to get closer than the nearest major city with any tracking tool, and in my experience it is often wrong... I live in Tucson but have seen Phoenix and other cities listed for my IP.

    <http://developer.quova.com/>

"Pass over your API key and an IP address.. get back the city,
state, ZIP, MSA, DMA, time zone, latitude, longitude, etc. for
that IP address. Quova even detects the carrier and line speed. Now
just imagine the first impression your application can make when it
knows this much information about the visitor before they type in a
single thing about themselves. Quova's dev team has populated the
docs with gobs of code samples, including C#, PHP, Python, Java,
Ruby and of course, Perl. Stop talking about how sexy local is --
think and build local by leveraging a platform like this."

I can second this. Geolocation attempts always identify my location as a city about 200 miles from my actual location.

I think there might be a Wordpress plugin for that. I also use the site www.whois.com and if you know the domain name you can just enter it and get a
    peek at the details.
