I'd like to get my articles ranked, but am looking for a way to spy on my competitors backlinks. I've searched for seo elite, but unfortunately I have
    not found a working version.

Any suggestions on software (that's available here) or other BH tricks that I can use to find out their backlink source?

Most of the backlink checking tools use Yahoo! Site Explorer anyway, so you could just go right to the source and use it for free:

    Code:
    http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

Spyglass has a free version. I do not remember the exact limitations but I believe you can only check 1k links and not save the results.

Write site:competitorurl into Google and find all of their pages. Then you simply add them one after one into Yahoo Site Explorer and you will find out all of their backlinks. If it's a small site you can probably skip the first step and just find all of their backlinks.

Then you check the PR on those backlinks and create a list on how many of each you need.

This assumes you have done your onpage SEO correctly. And remember, this will just give you an idea on how many backlinks you will need.
