Im doing a new whitehat(ish) site and I want to encourage discussion in the comments. From previous experience when I left them open then Id get tons of spam so how do I stop that?

Will akismet alone do the job?

Implement a captcha - it's the best way to stop spam. There are several captcha plugins you can install from the WordPress plugin repository.

You can set all comments to be moderated and approved manually before published on the site, then you can approve only the comments you need.

You can do this or try some other commenting system like facebook or disqus.

Implement captcha or just try using third party commenting platforms like Disqus.

I'd go with disqus. It makes it hard for spammers to place their trash-andlink-filled comments.
