One of the biggest advantages of IM is that you are independant.

I guess I could always make my profile pic of some hot girl then everyone would be banging my virtual door down wanting to be my e-friend [IMG]

One of its biggest drawbacks is that unlike other jobs where you dont have a social support network; you take all your lumps alone. This I found can be really depressing.

I have tried to balance my life out now with taking up sports again which is awesome but I was wondering if anyone elses work lifestyle is different who also does IM. If there are good ways to make a nice social group even if its only online it can be helpful to share in the badtimes with others.

Ive tried encouraging skype groups in the past but unfortunately they usually fizzle out to nothing.

There are sometimes some good guys I meet though who stay on my list and we shoot the shit but it is rare.

Wondering about other tricks to build up that work based social support network.

Have you considered renting out a small room/desk/office space in a young tech start up environment. Many governments will give you grants to help cover the costs. You'd be around like minded people you could bounce ideas off and build friendships with :)

I have the exact same problem. I've recently moved into a house with a bunch of mates which is great. It means I'm only on my own from 9 - 5. I've been looking into the idea of renting a space with some IM's in London but I'm still trying to get settled here.

I find it helps a lot if you go and spend the day working in a library or coffee shop. Just getting out and around people changes your mind set

Rather than focusing on IM people, you could try to socialize in general. Depending on your age there's a lot of people to socialize with that either work from home, work freelance, etc. Maybe make a LinkedIn profile for your country and find people who you'd get along with or find a forum for freelance/independent contractors in your country?

The thing you have to remember is that everyone is lonely unless they aren't. Everyone on some level wants friends and to socialize if they do not currently do it. You just have to find those people~

I make a point of spending a few hours on site with at least one client each week, just seeing other humans is great!

Why not go out and talk to people in person? Join a gym or be a part of some club.

Get a pet dog? Become a part time rent boy? Take up forum trolling as a hobby?

To be honest, its not just IM. I have a friend who had a company in the sanitation/home improvement industry, he was working it alone (getting clients and subcontracting to his supplier). He shut down his company last week and went back to work for his former employer, says he couldn't wait to get back to working with other people around.

Same thing with IM/SEO, if you develop a business that can hire people, you won't be lonely anymore since you'll have associates/employees. It's lonely at the beginning but as you build it up it will change.

Work more. You won't have time to feel lonely. Some music and coffee is all you need.

Get on Skype and everyone will want to talk to you. Try starting a Skype group about online marketing, post about it in a few forums and you will be overwhelmed with people who will want to talk to you.

I left a full time job to pursue this game full time. And one of the big deciding factors was that I was just fed up with people. It was the same bullshit, same battles, same people and same problems everyday. And nothing ever changed. I'm lucky now though cause I have family and friends as a support network. And if my mate has a day off I can change my schedule so we can do something. I find this work much better.

Although i I prefer my own company and don't suffer fools gladly. Lol.

I joined here here and bought tickets for ungagged as a way to meet others in the game. If you get talking to people on here some will stick as good friends.
