How can I make a membership site?

Not sure about Post Member Pro but I recommend Amember. Tried this out lately, basically make the design that you like, use the same theme in your template files and just password protect access with Amember to make a nice looking login area.

Has it got the tiered thing where members get more info and stuff the longer they are members?
 
You can add folders to protect based upon subscription. From here you can manually upgrade members subscriptions to higher ones that are completely hidden from others. This is the only way I have found around it yet, still playing with it at the moment.

It has some decent plugins, I'm looking for a full list of their plugins now though to see if I can find some that are more suitable for me such as creating a private folder for each user.

what about butter*flymarketing script? I have used this in the past. Thought it was decent. I could be biased though; never used anything else. how does it compare to the others?

have you looked at memberwing for wordpress blogs, want to do that when I get time. not sure it will do what you wnat with the levels, but they are upgrading a good bit it seams
