    Hello Fellow Whitehatters,

I have been lurking here for a long time and I need your advice on something.

We want to remove this WWW from our domain. We decided not to use it any more, will go with the domainname only. I never liked this www to start with anyway.

The site is not updated in years. We don't plan to make commercial use of it.

The problem is: WWW is PR8 and it has many backlinks from .edu and .gov sites. Even on an important part of Amazon and IMDB (I think these people just forgot about the link). Without WWW, domainname is PR0.

Would mod_rewrite help? Or will we lose all PR once we let go of this WWW virus?

    Thanks!

    S

    Another question would be:

We have again 2 unused websites. Both PR7.

However, these both websites serve from the same IP and documentroot. So if I go to google and type:

cache:domain1 > shows domain1 (has many links over years)
cache:domain2 > shows domain1 (no no links at all)

Both have the same PR. If we now decide to make domain2 a new website, would the PR of this one be PR0?

G00gle advises to do a 301 permanent redirect. Supposedly the PR will flow to the new page. Eventually. Maybe.

    - Make a Google Webmasters account
    - Add your domain, with www and without www
    - Verify your domains
    - Add a .htaccess 301 permanent redirect for www to non-WWW
    - In Google Webmaster Tools click 'change address' for your www domain and set it to non-WWW
    - Ping your www domain with ping-o-matic, which usually causes G to instacrawl your site (not sure if this speeds things up)
    - Pray

Learnt about them a year back or so. They don't mean antyhing because these are not commercial websites nor will they ever be. But just in case, we don't want to lose the PRs.

They are old domains... probably registered when most here were in liquid form.

This works for WWW part, we have dont that. I am more sure what would happen to PR though.

But it does not work for dom1 to dom2.
