My family surprised everyone with a 10 day cruise. YES 10 DAYS.... I can't really afford be be away that long from my online businesses. Is there any way to get free internet access on a cruise ship? There is no way in HELL I am going to pay their rates. I would end up spending hundreds of dollars!

    Does anyone have any ideas?

The cruise ship is named queen Elizabeth

I'm not sure too 100%, but would a dongle work? Here in the UK, you pay (well.. I pay £20 which is probably around $30) for 15 days internet access..

Not sure though in the US..

If you have a smart phone with 3G, probably you can transform your internet 3G in a wifi net. Of course, you won't have internet while travelling, but when you stop in a port, you will can :)

The 3g on the ship costs like 10$ just to load a stupid page. What is a dongle? And would this work on a cruise ship or could they block it from working?

Satellite? There are few service in Europe that offer internet through satellites...look for "satellite internet providers"!

A dongle should work. Here, a dongle basically means mobile broadband. You get a USB > top it up, let's say 4GB. Then you use the 4GB.

If you have an iPhone, just tether your connection. There's many ways to be honest. Pick one that works for you.

It all depends on where the ship is going. Other than satellite you are unlikely to have any chance of a connection when out at sea.

    1) Pay high fees for satellite
    2) Enjoy the holiday and work out how to make the business run for 10 days without you
    3) Use Internet only at ports and work out a prepaid solution for each port
    4) Suck it up and pay the high ship fees

While on the ocean, there is no other way then accepting their fees. I think you'll see some land every second day, get some free wifi and manage your business. Depending which area you're going to visit, you could get a umts stick and some flat rates. Don't use the standard rate, there are plenty providers offering flat rates for abroad. Much cheaper!

Hope you will find a solution to enjoy your trip!

Find out who's in charge of the internet aboard ship and make them a proposal.

Well the dongle is your own 3g device. Though im not sure yours will work too well at open sea if you don't bring in huge antenna and even then its slow as fuck.

I just went on a cruise and ya the rates are insane, I don't think there is a way. Also make sure you turn your phones roaming off, their are people getting charged thousands of dollars for roaming and they didn't even use the damn phone. I think you either have to suck it up and pay or not use it much, also it takes like 30 minutes just to load a damn page, the internet on most ships are reaaaaallly slow and they charge for time so don't expect to get much done.

The internet on a cruise is so slow because they charge you so much, you have no choice but to pay the big figures for slow service.

If you have kids then take the time off and spend quality time with them. Money isn't everything. Have a good time :)

Backtrack and/or changing your Mac address to someone elses. Though, enjoy your time off. I run my own consulting business and have had to work at odd hours on deadlines out of nowhere and it's no fun and I tried my best to not work while on an almost month long trip overseas recently. You aren't required to work, so relax.

Get a 3G card from a company who's network reaches wherever you are going. I know sprint has them and they are pretty fast and cheap
