There's a bunch of tools out there like traffic travis and rank tracker but the best free one is Google's keyword tool.

Google AdWords External is the best way. It gives you the monthly searches, even by country, and ranks keywords by competition. It's perfect for finding the easiest long tail keywords, but you can use it for comparison of shorter ones just by putting each of them in a different line in the search box.

I can't post URLs yet, but go to Google Adwords and look for "KeywordToolExternal".

Oh, and also, not only is it free, but you don't even need to be logged in to use it.

The best way is to check manually the sites that are your competitors. Google Keyword Tool gives you a good impression in a way, since lots of paid advertising tends to mean high competition, because the keywords pay much more. Not a definite rule, but a good one to keep in mind.

You don't need anything other than the G free tool. Make sue to switch the results to ["exact match"]

i cant believe how many people are telling to OP to use adwords this is FALSE!!!

there are 2 types of competition in play:
1: competition of buyers on adwords....normally we want this to be as high as possible if we are to place adsense ads
2: competition how sites rank for keyword...or with other words how hard is to rank for some keyword in google (you wont see this is google adwords)...we want this to be low

i am quite sure OP (original poster) asked for no2
for this you need tool like traffic travis or something similar there are even some online tools (cant recall them now, and i am not sure how good they are..i just use traffic travis). here on bhw there are also descriptions how to do that manualy

Google keyword tool is great but it gives you competition based on paid advertising but in order to find out organic competition you an follow the following practices:

Search for a keyword in Google and see how many results are listed.
what are the websites that are listed on 1st page, their page ranks, backlinks if possible.
then use advance search operators like allintitle:"keyword" and how many websites use a particular query in title if not then how are they ranking for the term!

On a side note, there's no exact organic search competition finding tool and one has to find it by doing analysis.

    Hope this helps.

    Quick Method:

Install free "seo quake" addon for Firefox and then simply search your keyword/phrase. This will show you what people see when they search the phrase/keyword. Seo quake shows the pr, backlinks, age, etc... of each result.

You want to see lots of results in the first five with 0 pr, low backlinks, etc... because this will be your competition. You do not want to see sites with no/little chance of outranking with manual backlinking unless you have the tools and know how to wage SEO war!
