Google say they will f*** your sh*t up if you have links on paid directories now. How do they determine if a directory is paid? Do they use a bot to crawl for keywords like "pay for listing" or whatever, or is it all manual?

I found a regular site in my niche that's got some power behind it, and they have one page on their whole site where they list similar businesses. I can get a link there but on the page it says you have to fork over $50. I'm 99.9% sure Google won't have applied a manual filter to it, as there's 2 OBL on the page and it's not a directory site. It's some page hidden away in a dark corner, but still has pretty good PR. Legit non-spammy site too that's been around in my niche for years I've checked all the metrics and manually ran it through ahrefs.

Could it come back and bite me in the ass in any way to get this link?

If you think it's worth the $50 they asked for, go ahead and purchase it. There's always some sort of added risk with each backlink you build, so don't buy the link if you are afraid your site might get penalised in the future.

How do I determine the risk? I need to know whether link buying is determined by the bot or manually. Manually nobody would find it.

Seriously? If google algorithm can see it so does a manual reviewer, but i don't think you have as much risk getting a backlink from that page.If it is not spammed you are fine.
