How bad will this affect SEO?

    If "category" is changed to "thread-category" but the links go to the "thread-category" one will it impact seo much?

    siteexample.com/category/dogtraining goes to siteexample.com/thread-category/dogtraining


    I'm trying to edit the ForumEngine theme so that "thread-category" is changed to "category" to make the category pages stay the same but if changing and redirecting doesn't have much of an impact on the traffic I get, its okay.

    It will affect your SEO, if you use Sitemaps make sure you delete sitemap and add a new one after you update your links so you can be sure that you do not create duplicated content.

    Proper redirection from the old links to new links is required if you are generating big traffic, but if its in the phase of hit-n-tries you need not to do that. of course! Don't miss the site map part mentioned by Adrian.. Also update webmasters .
