We let our ISP put up a tower (its about as big as a cell phone tower) on our property. The deal was we get free internet in exchange. Do you think we are getting ripped off with those statistics?

Free's free man. I choose to steal cable because the comcast guy came into my back yard and gave me a hard time when I forgot to pay my bill on time. A fucking phone call wouldn't do?

And if all you're getting for that tower is free internet, then, yeah, you're being ripped off...

Nope, no wireless connection around here besides ours. How can you check if other people are using ours though?

well, if it's WPA i would say there are little chances of that happening, if it's WEP than switch to WPA-PSK at least, use a good password and don't worry much about that.

But you can go to the router config interface (usually 192.168.0.1), login with the admin user and pass(you will find it in the user manual, or if pre-configured by the provider they can give it to you) and check the computers that are connected to the router, i'm pretty sure you'll recognize any computer that doesn't belong to your household. Sometimes some moronic guys will leave their network discovery ON (like selecting a domestic connection instead of public does) and that will make their computers(and shared folders) visible in the Domestic Group of all the computers connected to the LAN. ;)

    OK.

Yeah the deal sucks. You get a big cancer causing mast in your garden and in return you get a slap in the face half meg connection. That is a poor poor deal but Im guessing you have signed a big contract for a long time now.

Are you asking us as you want us to say no you got a good deal or do you want the truth? I live in a small village in England next to a (slightly bigger) town that nobody has even heard of and I get 7.5Mb from my router.

man your ripped off from the deal.. ;) You can charge them with a lot more money, and use that money to get a more faster internet connection than you have, and maybe you have an extra money to save too.. :)

i hope it's not the only connection you can use, it may enough for browsing bhw, but you'll have a very hard time if you want to watch a vid on yt

i guess you signed a contract, so you don't have much choice now than buying another connection from them or from another ISP

of course you can ask them to (at least) double that speed, that would be something
