I just found a footprint one of the local seo companies uses for the sites they rank, so I went through and checked the sites out. I found something really weird when I looked at their backlinks. Nearly every link they had was from pages that were nothing but links. There was no pictures, no articles, no videos, nothing I thought you need to keep your backlinks safe. Below is one the sites, every backlink I found is like this.

How is this possible? Like when setting up PBNs we take every precaution possible and still get deindexed. How can they just make link farms that work?

    Home Page:
Besides selling SEO services, they sell penalty removal/disavow services to the same customer.

Once the customer realizes that their website went down the drain they will be offered to build a new website on a new domain.

    Rinse and repeat.

That doesn't seem to be the case. These people are still using the footer link to the SEO agency and they are still ranking. Majestic ranks all these link farms very highly, not sure how this happening. Some of the farms are even advertising "email:x to buy a link of this page"

Majestic is FAR, FAR away from being compared to Google in terms of rankign a domain. How are those link farms ranking? I am betting Aty's answer is right on the money. No reputable SEO company would use links like that to rank their clients. It's short-sighted and eventually blows up in their face.

    Churn and burn material.

They are the leading SEO firm in the area with by far the most customers. So I'm not sure how they are doing so well if the links are only there to penalize their clients.

As for the ranking of the link farms, I checked a few, they show up for their name. I'm not sure their target keywords. Most appear to be extremely old, some are .edu's.

That doesn't mean they are the best. That just means they've managed to sell themselves the most. If they are linking to their clients like that, they are in no way "whitehat" or "safe".

Check if the linkfarms rank for other terms via semrush. Maybe they are outsourcing all the actual SEO.

The root domains seem to do pretty well. The pages with the links don't receive any search traffic.

They are all extremely old, 1995-2005. The owners are just spamming links on some pages. Mainly links.html

I wonder if google is still treating them like old sites(they have new outbound links) and using their old way of judging outbound links value.

Also, yea, I think they are outsourcing all of the SEO.

Either they never ranked, or it's one of those page-wide slaps. I've seen something similar work extremely good - authority site gets hacked, landing page created, spammed with crap links, slingshots to the top real fast, and gets penalized after some time.

OP: That is a directory website. Its a fake directory obviously, BUT the fact is if you pump enough authority into a directory its a great link source. Real directories like Moz are absolutely AMAZING links, akin to Wikipedia in power. So they just built a network of fake directories, and aged ones most likely. Not a bad thing unless they do a lot of them, which sounds like they maybe did.

The pages don't have any form of navigation, categories or search. Not really structured like a directory. But you are probably right.
