How are keyword phrases factored into density?

I can't seem to understand how to check for keyword density when it comes to a keyword phrase. Like say I have a 4 word phrase I'm trying to rank for. I use it in my title tag, and in the header off my content. But after that, I don't have the chance to repeat that phrase that often in the content without looking spammy. But the content will have the individual keywords. So how do those individual keywords get factored into the keyword phrase?

I read that a few days ago and it was very informative. But it never really went into what I'm asking. That is the post where I read about the 1-2 percent keyword density. But it never really went into keyword phrases vs keywords.

All the posts I read online all seem to talk about individual keywords, and keyword density for individual words. But nothing discusses how that works when you're trying to rank for a keyword phrase.

PHPBuilt's post addresses this too if you read further on, basically single keywords should be no higher than 2% density even if you are not targeting it. 2 word keywords should be at 1.5% and 3 word keywords should be at 1% or less.

Use this to check the keyword densities of a page: http://www.ranks.nl/tools/spider.html

Interesting stuff. I had a hard time reading past the first post because there are apparently over 400 posts. But I will definitely look into that because it sounds exactly like what I'm looking for. Thanks a lot!
