I'm just doing some keyword research using Market Samurai but the search results are quite different to the values given by Google's keyword tool even though it is meant to get the values from there (I know 1 gives daily and 1 gives monthly results) which has made me question the competition figures. Any idea why the values are different and whether the competition values (SEOC) can be trusted?

It's not :) The numbers shown by Long Tail Pro and Google adwords tool look more trustable.

Market samurai gets the traffic and indexed pages count from Bing now, making it useless.

The only module of any value is the SEO competition matrix, all the rest are garbage.

If you have time, get a refund, and buy "ultimate niche finder" instead.

The search volumes i can get from Google keyword tool pretty easily. Can I trust the SEO competition (SEOC) column though as that's the big time saver

I used to be a heavy user of MS (back in the hazy days of the 30-day challenge - remember those guys?). It pulls results from Bing (of all places), and it's bloody slow!

Anyway, +1 for Long Tail Pro.

What do you use now? I'm not to fussed about the keyword search function as i can do this pretty easily on my own, it's the competition that takes time without a tool. Can the MS competition tools be trusted?

The competition module in both are good. Both have a free trial so you can test it.

I thought LTP was just a keyword search tool and didn't give much info on competition?

I've been researching this all morning and ultimate niche finder by Clyde on bhw seems to be the best. I'm going to buy it when I have more time to use it fully!

Yeh I've seen that and it looks good and for £49 you can't go too far wrong. Clude normally offers good stuff.

I've already got Market Samurai though so I would like to understand what is wrong with it and why people don't like it rather than just blinding following for no real reason. Sure I get MS crashes a bit and the interphase is a bit out of date and slow but what I really want to know is whether the values it pulls can be trusted or not. You can always pull the keywords from the keyword tool and import them and just use the competition values assuming they are accurate. The competition values seem to be pulled from MajesticSEO so i would have thought it would be accurate but i don't know.

Any ideas if the competition values are accurate or not?

Quick update for those interested. I have compared Market Samuarai to Long Tail Pro and found that the competition figures correlate perfectly.

In terms of keyword search, LWP gives far more but this isn't necessarily good. It gives you far more ideas but you can't add negative keywords so you spend ages cutting out the rubbish. If you are just doing research for your own sites this isn't a big deal but if you need to justify your choice to clients then it is as you don't want irrelevant terms in there. The keyword search in MS is not as good and does have a tendency to crash however you can import keyword lists from elsewhere which means you can do it in Google's keyword tool if you want where you can add negative keywords etc. which will save you loads of time.

I personally used the SEOmoz top 10 rankings competition analysis for the next bit as it gives a bit more detail and more fancy graphs but the results in MS were comparable.

Conclusions. Both are good, and MS is not as rubbish as people say but I'm sure it isn't what it use to be.

I hope that clears things up.
