Just stumbled upon this article (fresh story) how this guy made $3.1 million for a domain he registered when domains were free to register (back in the 90s). Great story

Interesting read, also noticed how apparently 1.4 million people have visited the page. Interesting story but sounds like he just got pretty lucky. Usually I'm all for guys that see the potential from the beginning, but really he fell upon this. Maybe he did something with what he fell upon, and that is respectable, but mostly it sounds like he just rode the market up. Like people who just bought Apple stock back in 199X and today try to pretend that they saw something that wasn't even envisioned until ~2002ish. Solid article though.

    Hindsight eh.
We all know what a good domain can do for us now, we just needed to do it when it mattered.

He didn't even register it for the right reason :D

Looks like he won the lottery. The odds are lower than a lottery in fact, lotteries have weekly or monthly winners, this guy waited 20 years to win it.

The site looks like a piece of crap if you ask me. I will never understand why people shall out millions on domains if they don't do anything about the design. Looks like a 2002 design or something like that

"in domainers circles" he is well known. They also (he and his brother) own hundreds of other generic domains like that. they run businesses off of many of them. 3.1 million is nothing in the domaining world. Sure it is alot of money but when you have several domains of that caliber it is all part of their business. You can still get good domains but it is not as easy. Hard work can get you high mid $xx,xxx and higher.

Wow that's a nice sale, the 1990's was definitely the time to get in on domain acquisitions!

The domaining world is far from saturated. Sure the exceptional domains have been taken long time ago but, as SEOrasta said, there's money to be made even today. New niches appear all the time. Some hot niches now:

    - 3d printers
    - wearables
    - robots
    - holograms/holographics
    - marijuana/weed/hemp
    - cloud
As a side note, the owner of 3dprint.com is constantly getting low xxx.xxx$ offers on this domain, if he'll hold onto it for a few more years, it will be worth low x.xxxx.xxxx$ or more.

Of course you can't get great domains in the above niches now, but 1-2 years ago, you could have got the motherpearls.

Some future niches still untapped (that hard at least):
    - fog computing or fogging (check it out)
    - mead, yes the ancestral honey drink, it's making a big comeback with all this vegan, healthy livers and with all the hype on home breweries popping up like mushrooms everywhere
    - wireless energy
    - big data and smart data (the future of everything marketing and anything remotely connected to statistics)

You should keep an eye out for future technologies and trends. Read science journals and see all the breakthroughs. Use your due diligenge and think outside the box on how these technologies will impact the world, if it sounds good to you, then get in on it. But remember, it's all a gamble in the end.
