I guess this post is to really mark on how important on page seo is. I recently did a few on page changes to my EMD site which is in a fairly competitive amazon affiliate niche. As for off page link building I only had around 60 links with only a few targeting my exact keyword, so not really too much done at all.

On the home page I had a 2300 word post and lets just say i was focusing on "cheap outdoor bike". These aren't my actual keywords!

    Before My Update -
    • 2.5%-3% keyword density for "Cheap Outdoor Bike"
    • Around 4%-5% for "outdoor bike"
    • One of the pictures was named cheap-outdoor-bike.jpeg
    • No Youtube Video
    • Around 3 Outbound links to non competing related authority sites (Wikipedia, or .gov sites)
    • Around 4-5 links to other articles on my site
    After My Update -
    • 1.2% keyword density for "cheap outdoor bike"
    • 2% keyword density for "outdoor bike"
    • The picture I mentioned earlier I went into the properties/details, and added "cheap outdoor bike" into the title, the tags (In here I also added related keywords) and in the author section I added my website url.
    • Added a Youtube Video
    • I have around 10 Outbound links to related authority sites (not including my 20 amazon affiliate links. I have a chart comparing 15 products so this may be keeping my rankings down also but i'm not fully sure.)
    • Around 6 links to different articles on my website.

    Ranking Improvements -
    "Cheap outdoor bike" Before - 25 After - 11
    "outdoor bike" Before - 115 After - 73

No These aren't my real keywords.

So I hope this helps some of you! These changes took about 4-5 days, but if you have a more established site it will probably move a little faster.

Was that a complete article re-write or a large edit?

Following PHPBuilt's guide it looks like. I've seen some pretty decent rank increases doing the same :)

Lots of people have reported yesterday changes in SERPS. Google must have released a new update or something like that. So your dropping (increasing :D) might not be related to the changes you made.

Yeah sorry about the title. Right after I posted it I was just like oh it probably would make more sense the other way. Hahah

And no it wasnt a complete rewrite I just added the links and maybe a couple of sentences.

As the old saying goes if it is not broke then do not fix it. People are to scared to approach over 3% keyword density but as long
as the article is normal and not stuffed where the reading becomes redundant then it's not a big issue. Your study also shows Matt Cutts is full of shit when he says KD does not really mean much.

Is this all just k/w density for the content ? or does it include html elements like meta tags etc etc too?

That is just for the content. Although the meta wouldnt have bumped it up too much since it was 2k+ words of content.
