    Hi guys,

I just found out that Optimum Online ULTRA is available in my area. for $100 a month and a $300 setup fee (ouch) I can get a cablemodem that can do speeds of up to 101mbps download and 15mbps upload.

Their TOS says I am allowed to host webservers on port 80. It comes with 1 ip, but I can get more if I need.

My idea is to built a stack of ATOM ubuntu servers to host my websites, put them in a rack with UPS for power backup. While the cost upfront may be steep, I think it could be worth it. Plus Iget to use these fast speeds for my regular internet browsing.

What do you guys think of this plan? Has anyone tried hosting websites on Optuimum BOOST or ULTRA? Do you think 15mpbs upload is enough to host 20-50 medium sized websites?

More info on Optimum Ultra is here:

Remember It's "up to" 15Mbps, so you may not even get that. Even if you get the maximum, I think your websites will choke if they hit a peak of visitors all at once. Pushing 1.875MB/s is a theoretical maximum provided their line gives it and your hardware supports it. I think your power usage and cooling requirements also need to be taken into account as when hosting servers, they are not negligible. You won't have a single problem downstream (by the sounds of it) but their upstream is what you really need. Most ISPs aren't really into providing decent bandwidth there. Do they have a decent SLA, like 100% or 99.9% guaranteed network uptime? Your single point of failure will be the cable line, if that goes down, you are wasting money for no reason.

don't know what it is, but it sounds painful
you can get unmanaged atom servers for $39/month.. I think it would still be cheaper and more reliable to rent a dedi than host it yourself from home..

Thanks for the advice guys, I am going to hold off on Optimum Ultra until they get rid of the $300 setup fee.

$100 a month for that speed is not bad, but the $300 setup fee for nothing is hard to swallow.
