I am a noob, and I totally loved hostgator.

I had never used hosting before and thought it would be so complicated. Well, not with hostgator. They have videos on how to setup everything and basically I was running in a couple of hours, and that's from ZERO knowledge of hosting a site.

Their cPanel is really cool and I never had any problem. The swan package is $15 per month. I got my first month at a discount (for $4) using a coupon found on google.

If you're a noob, definitely go with hostgator.

I have never used another hosting service before so I can't tell you it's better or worse. I can just say I'm 100% satisfied. If you have any questions I'll be glad to try to answer them.

I currently use hostgator for a couple whitehat sites and I've also been very happy with them. My biggest praise has to be their prompt response to support requests. I asked for a simple increase of ram in the php.ini for my account and it was done within 30 minutes! I cant say I get the same treatment, even if I call, at places like dreamhost and such. Hostgator also offers ssh access but doesn't advertise it very well. You have to email them to request it as its not enabled by default but I find it makes managing your site sooooooooooo much easier than through ftp. I wish they weren't so restricted with the shell though which is why I pay for a colo too....

    Yeah their support is ok.

The only problem with them is that the data center they used to have all their servers in:The Planet was previously run by a guy who loved what he did. It was run as a kickass operation. As H0stgat0r grew, the guy decided to sell up and they bought the guy out. Now it is not as kickass, and so you will find issues with the servers dealt with less competently.

If you are a newb and barely testing the default set up this is unlikely to be something you come up against, though server outages may now last longer and be more frequent etc.

In short I am trying to point out to you guys that the running of the location the hardware is in (servers etc.) and the well being and commitment of the staff on that site, will have an impact on the level of service you get through your lifetime with the hosting company you rent from.

there support is great if ya go STRAIGHT to live chat, skip the ticket bullshit

However what sucks is when you have high traffic and overload their server. they just shut yuo down for a few hours.

so dont get on thje front page of digg or something or your gonna just go down

my issue is that they wont let me host my image hosting script on there

    even a small one.

I've been with Hostgator for a couple of years now and going to live chat is the way to handle problems. It has always worked for me and they solve problems fast. I was only down once for a couple of hours, they fixed it quick. Recommended.

I have used Bluehost for a couple of years and just recently joined up with Hostgator. Bluehost is great, but customer service is terrible. Thanks for the heads up with the live chat on Hostgator. Hopefully I won't need it, but...

HostGator is a pretty good host, but a lot of people are having problems with it.
It really depends on what you need - like CPUGEEK said, their not really complaint-friendly!
So if you want to do anything risky, they're definately not the one to go with. :)

yep i dont really understand why people complain so much on the threads about them, its probably just the competition complaining - i rarely have any problems with them - the customer care is good and quick and you get a free domain :)

Yes, I use them for a few white hat sites too. I don't have many issues, but when I do, I would also cosign that going to live chat will set you free every time.

Does Hostgator allow adult website? Too bad my Hostmonster web hosting doesn't allow adult content to be hosted on it.

Yep... I can attest to that. Once you get a complaint they shit can you and then ask questions. Doesn't even matter if the complaint came in from a well known source.

I have had regular Joe Schmoe's complain on my "marketing tactics" while hosting at Hostgator. All of a sudden I was like "why are my sites down...". Called them up and sure enough... Some Joe Schmoe complained and they shut me off.

I did some bullshitting with them and got my hosting account reactivated. But from that point on I moved my more blackhat stuff over to another hosting company.

But... On the flipside their cheap hosting accounts work good and they don't seem to bog down their servers with too many clients being on one box.

they dont seem to have problem with adult sites. i have one gay dating site and its running for sometime without any problem. There might be problems with the porn & xxx sites though.

As long as you are doing WH there shouldnt be any problem. Once you get to BH side, which u already did because u r at BHW one needs to be more careful and spread you sites across different hosting providers.

The old saying still goes good here, dont put all your eggs in one basket. " it will be eaten by snakes"

I just signed up for hostgator hosting since i'm only paying $4 in the 1st month for unlimited bandwith and other features. What concerns me now after reading some of your post is that i'm afraid they will shut me down if people complaint about my bh marketing (if they found out). Can you suggest some backups for hosting that won't mind you doing bh marketing particularly c***** s*******? thanks
