    Hi,

I just bought hosting with hostgator, using a coupon code that helped me pay $1cent for the 1st month hosting.
The first day I bought host with them I was able to loggin to cpanel, ftp, now the 2nd day, it asks me for photo from drivers license + the credit card number that was used for this account (if I payed with credit card)

I find this very weird ... can't see why would they suddenly ask me for this ?
    I feel like a criminal ..:)

I'm thinking to quit this guys ... what's your opinion ?

Get photoshopping, this is quite common these days if they suspect you might be up to no good

    HOSTGATOR is built upon fraud.

People there is no such thing as unlimited everything it does not exist. There is no magic drive that you are on that has unlimited data space on it. there is no such thing as unlimited bandwith . These things do not exist.

So how does this happen. If they get a customer that is using more than what they feel is necessary they terminate his account without a justifiable reason saying that the account was using up to much resources. Wait what? Too much resources? But but this is unlmiited hosting right unlimited everything . WRONG.

Basicly you get what you pay for.

So upload your photo ID then risk them using it for some more of there fraudulent based schemes. Looks like to me this is another instance ohh we got the money but we can not prove who you are so we will ban you. Keeping the money and you get nothing. They do this type of shit all the time. They are constantly coming up with reasons to terminate your account if you actually try to use unlimited resources.

    I went through the process...

    I admit it's a ball-ache, but it's all legit!

My friend here in South Africa has his own hosting company and the stories of fraud he told me is horrific dude!

Totally understandable due to all the fraudulent Nigerian mofos!! :)

Legit? Nothing hostgator does is legit! My friend works in the data center where there servers are . That is The planet which is where there servers are located. No they do not even own there own data center they are just resellers them selves.

I know some really horrid stuff about hostgator and I use to use hostgator but I will never ever use hostgator after hearing this shit.

Almost all web hosting companies that promise unlimited everything are full of $hit.

I know my hosting company has things like Ram limits, file limits, file per directory limits, simultaneous connection limits, and so on. It is physically impossible to ever even reach one of their own plans. Which was like 5TB for BW/Disk Space... In fact they made a freaking wiki about was their limits even close to true... While it's theoretically possible if certain conditions on every level are maintained perfectly the way they set things up there is no realistic option. And I'm sure this is the case with host gator as well.

Granted the price is pretty good and I do get a lot hence why I've been with them for 2+ years... Basically, your going to have bumps all along the way with any hosting company just about. $hit happens.

here's the message I sent to them. Will keep you up to date with the answer I got from them.
    Code:
    Hello,

Thank You for your security measures. This makes me feel more safe with you.

Before I provide you with my Photo ID I'd apreciate if I will be allowed to backup my files from your server ( which I uploaded yesterday ) and also if you are kind to tell me if I already represent a threat for your servers ( considering I haven't even had my website up on your servers ) and if yes, what the reason would be as I feel special already.

Please let me know when my ftp account is enabled so I can start backing up my files.

I added in the 1st day 2 domains and about 4 subdomains. maybe this scared them .. :) loosers

I setup hostgator last week and i needed to phone them to verify my account.

I asked why? and they explained that my ip address was 300miles from my location, so I took the time to explain that this is were my ISP lives, not me!

Took about 5mins to confirm my details, but took them about 3hours to reactivate my account...

I agree, hostgator sucks. It's very popular because of their affiliate program.

I've got the answer for them and they said that. their words are italic format
    Code:
I'm [I]not allowed to have access to the server until my account is verified with the photo ID.[/I]
My [I]account has been flagged because the information I provided was obviously and most likely filled in automatically by web browser.[/I] (below are the fields required and my answer to them :d )

    [I]City: city
    State/Region: state
    Zip: zip[/I]

Still is not a good reason since I paid with paypal ... why would they care where I live :)
Theyr job is to host my websites .. if they can't do that bcause of their lame security thing .. than I'll move to someone else who loves having me as a user.

Claudiu, send them exactly such email like you said, after moving your data and stuff:

"Your job is to host my websites .. If you can't do that because of your very poor and lame security .. then I'll move to someone else who loves having me as a user. SO FCK OFF"

Send them such letter after you move your stuff from them.
If i were you i would send it. I would not care.

EDIT: wtf is going on actually? PayPal bans his users and closes accounts with no reason, Google shuts down Adsense accounts also sometimes without reason, HostGator f*cks with their customers.

    Crazy. What's going on?

Weird, I have had no issues what so ever with HG for over a year now, and I host well over 100+ sites there... I did get a notice from them once that one of my sites was pushing the limits of their server and they offered to move everything to a VPS if I wanted. I didn't get any sort of ''strong-arming'' from them at all....

I got the same problem with Hostgator, but with my sales as an affiliate. Those MFckers asked for photo ids from my customers and people normally will just leave them for such demands. Due to that my commission went down 50% :( Fcuk!

I concur with the comments above, and prefer to work with free hosting services and subdomains. At least there you know what the deal is in terms of you not really 'owning' the space you're using. Paid hosts can give one a false sense of security that "at least I can't be suddenly shut down," when of course you can, as soon as your bandwidth is deemed too high, your content too 'hot,' your CPU usage too much, etc.

Better to operate a 'set it and forget' farm of automated blogs and minisites on freehosts, wind them up and move on. When/if one host stomps on you, choose to fix the problem OR just disregard, and keep on building your next farm.
