Does anybody know of a good web host (besides hostgator) that allows you to sign up and pay monthly as opposed to the full 12 mo months upfront?

I have been hosting with them for years. No problems and I pay monthly via paypal.

host gator is a really good option. as well, if you look around there are good coupons. for example: i think there is a coupon to get your first month for 1 cent. do a search for pp as payment is a huge plus anyways.

    Bluehost.
It has what you are after both ways. Meaning: you can pay per month and at the same time, if you cancel - you can get your money back pro-rata.
    So it's a win/win situation.
In addition [and I've tried a few] they are really good, plus you've got nothing to loose with them. If, for whatever reason you won't find them OK - get your money back and move to another web hosting company.

    From their TOS:
Cancellations After 30 Days. Subscriber may cancel his/her/its Services at any time, before or after automatic account renewal, and, with the exception of any Nonrefundable Fees set forth in Paragraph 3.01(A) and setup fees, if any, which are nonrefundable after 30 calendar days, receive a pro-rated refund for all other fees paid for Services, less $10 per "Free Domain Name."

Namecheap has hosting plans in which you can be invoiced monthly. I curretnly have a Pro account at $6.95 per month which has good features included like unlimited subdomains.

I just got my account suspended from byethost, because of heavy load to their server... (using shared hosting), now asking me upgrade to VPS with them and they not replied yet whether all the files will be restored to VPS or I have to start from the scratch.

I have around 10 autoblogs and traffic is around 2000 uniques per day and all are gone now, I am looking for another hosting without this problem in future.

So, if you have only limited traffic can go with byethost!

I host my blogs with hawkhost for 3 months and I may say I'm pleased with them.
customer support is great, they always respond quickly when I submit a ticket. .
am I forget to say that they're also cheap?
