are homepage (top level domain names) domains on their own hosting system worth much more than web 2.0s?

If I had to invest in 5-10 domain (tld) homepages on their onw hosting or 25-40 web 2.0 properties, which do you think is a better investment (at least initially).

Obviously, your own hosting with your domains is the better investment.

    Why?

Simple. You are in control of everything and all you need to do is make sure to take backups and maintain your domains.

Compared to web properties, they can be deleted at any time and are very limited to what you can do with them.

A domain and hosting is cheap and the benefits are endless.

Well how much better are they in the short run? If I want my site to rank now (get money to re-invest back into the site) which is better?

The cost for 5 domains with hosting could be $50 or so. For 25 web 2.0 properties, it can be done for $5.

Will the top 5 domains better rank my site than the top 25 web 2.0 properties?

It depends on how you want to do it and what you want to risk. You can put hard work into your web 2.0's but what are you going to do when that one guy reports you and gets your web 2.0 deleted for looking like a spam blog? All your hard work is gone then.

If you want to be on the safe side, go with your hosting/domain names.

I've seen web 2.0 properties rank on the 1st page for certain terms but you get more SEO benefits with your own domain name honestly.

I mean having the 5 domains pointing to my main (money) site instead of web 2.0s properties which is common with link wheels. Also, is a .me the same weight as a .com?

Get the domains, then make web 2.0s linked to the domains, then blast the 2.0s with profiles, comments, and bookmarks. If any of the 2.0s go down you still have your domains.
