    Home Page:
I have a site in a high competition health niche, it's a rare domain and is the EMD (500k + searches)

The site has had a pretty heavy link building approach, and it's all gone fairly well imo, however the site got a light slap and everything went to page 100+

I started diluting the anchor text and making it not so over optimized, and the site is now back in to the top 5 pages for most keywords, but the main homepage is not ranking for the main focus keyword (Exact match keyword for the domain)

Is there a way to fix this? Should I be working on building links deep into the internal silo content system? Build more powerful links at the homepage?

Looking for some info from people who have seen these homepage penalties before

    Thanks!

Are the inner pages that are ranking relevant to the keyword? Do they have the keyword in the URL? Ive noticed this as well, but google is ranking good pages instead of the homepage. For example, my main page is optimized for main keywords, but there are inner pages that are just plain better for certain keywords that are now replacing the homepage even though the home page has most of the backlinks.

I had a similar issue and I'm not able to detect it.

So I have a strategy to give more power to my Tier 1 links which have the exact anchor for my domain name.

One of the ranking factors is the % of low quality links Vs. high quality links in your link profile.

Hypothetically, if you have low quality backlinks from 1000's of forum profiles/article directories/web 2's, then you should build 1000's of high quality web 2's/blog posts/more contextual/press releases/etc links and then building more links as Tier 2 to give more link juice to Tier 1.

Everybody says if this was done right, then you should touch the difference in your visits/earnings.

It will take time to do this, but I guess the output worth the time & efforts.

Did you checked the "anchor texts" diversity for the main page ? Also, check with the keyword density on the homepage. Lower the keyword density and test it once
