One of my wordpress sites that I have registered as www[dot]mydomain[dot]com is showing up in the SERPs (the homepage) for it's main keyword as "mydomain[dot]com" without the "www." in front of it.

I have built all my links to the "www" version and when I click on the link in the SERPs (without the "www") it actually will go to the "www" version. When I do a "site:hxxp://mydomain[dot]com" only the homepage is listed without the "www" while the other pages of the site are listed with the "www".

I have the All In One SEO plugin and have checked off the canonical option as well. Under general settings in WP Admin panel I have the site with "www" also. Is this just a Google cache issue that will update soon with the correct version in ther SERPs with the next update or do I need to do some sort of 301 redirect by adding code to the .htaccess file?

Any suggestions on how to fix this issue?

I had a similar problem with my site and just used a 301 permanent redirect in my .htaccess file just as you have mentioned. It took a few days but Google eventually caught on and now only has my site with the "www" prefix.

Theres different ways to add it to your root .htaccess file but a quick search will show you how to do it.

On the subject, you might want to make sure you have some custom error pages like 404, 403, 500 etc. If you dont have these you can use your .htaccess to set these as well, or you can use your server's webserver settings if you have root access.

    ALSO:

When I registered with Webmaster tools on Google it gives you the option to choose your preferred website style, either with the "www" or not, so thats something else to look into.

You can also try "webmaster tools" -> "settings" ->Preferred Domain - and ‘check' www.

When I selected the "www" option it told me I had to revirefy that "hxxp://mydomain[dot]com belong to me. But it did not mention how do I go about doing it?

Dantob, just add your domain again but do it without the "www" part of the address and make the preferred name for both your domains the one with the "www" prefix.

In your wordpress control panel just go to Settings -> General and add 'www' to the URL bars.

They make that part so confusing, but you basically create an entirely new site, so start over, but don't delete the first site so that you will have 2 sites in your Webmaster tools.

After verifying and forwarding you can delete the one you don't want.

Really bad usability and NO FAQ for it either.
