I have been thinking about why I was not getting traffic to my site. I was ranking 7th on google for a 19,000 a month keyword. I thought I was clearing the cookies etc by doing a incognito search on chrome..I was coming up 7th using this method.

Now, I check on MS and i'm right at the top of the 4th page on google which would explain why I'm getting no traffic.

I don't know which one to believe. Is there an accurate way to determine my ranking?

did a search on my phone.. i'm at the top of 4th page!! Aww man! That's crap! I was thinking I was gonna get paid soon as well! Back to the stupid drawing board!

You need to disable search customisation and also be signed out of google.

You dont have to clear cookies or delete browsing history.

do a search on google and then when you hit a results page look at the top right of your screen, hit the web history hyperlink hit disable search customisation.

Job done you will then recieve the results the rest of the world does.

I recommend you to use a tool to keep track of you ranking. Maybe Advanced Web Ranking.

Here is what's happening. Check MS to see for which county is the search optimized. Or : use hidemyass.com to google and see for yourself (US search)

are you from an other country then the google site you are trying to rank your site for, i guess you want to rank in google.com? (example, you are from europe and trying to rank your site in the US results)

google gives different results for every country. in my experience it can result in at least a 10 position difference searching from an dutch or US connection.

if you trying to rank on google.com use something like rank checker (firefox plugin) to check rankings.. thats live data, webmaster tools is outdated info, at least a few weeks old.

also 7th isn`t that great either.. i dont know if the 19k search volume you mentioned is broad match or exact match.
exact match results can be a whole lot less then broad match results.

7th place should get you about 1% of the traffic.. and thats with a great headline/title.
thats 190 visitors a month. And with a bad title and/or a badly optimized discription it could be even less...

19k isn`t that much unless you rank top 3, or at least above the fold(what people see on their screen without scrolling down) with an grabbing title and discription.

anything else isn`t gonna cut it, unless the top 5 is unrelated and not helpfull to the user at all, but that`s very unlikely to happen nowdays.

being 7th only works for keywords with over 500k searches and if you optimize your title and discription the right way..

if you wanna fool google when searching out of the us,

you need to set the language in your browser to englisch US, and log on trough a us proxy.

a different language will scew up the results, even with a us proxy...

Just use Google webmaster tools to track your ranking. I log in everyday to check for problems and ranking. One thing i have learned is ranking no 1 is hella important because I have many keywords that get tons of impression on page 1 but no clicks because they are ranking 7-8. Let's see how long it will take to rank 1. I am willing to wait years :)

Darn, just checked a couple of mine, and same thing. I, too, naively thought that clearing cookies was good enough.

to check Google.com ranking use this firefox plugin
http://tools.seobook.com/firefox/rank-checker/

and i use "Google global" plugin (cant find the url right now) to fetch google.com serp pages.
it lets you pull the most important local pages for that keyword.
first do a search for a keyword in your local google page, and after that you can pull the google.com, co.uk, .nl .de etc results for that keywords with a single click.

if you are from a non english country you wil usually experience rather different results between the two..

to do your research right, you basicly cant do without this plugin..

before i used it i thought i found a few great keywords based on the lack of competition returned from the google.nl listing. but later on i foundthat the google.com serps where way different. and much more compettitive..

its really important to get this right.

for example:
in the google.nl results ezine, articlebase, squedoo, yahoo answers and hubpages are hardly ever found, even when searching with english keywords..
but in the google.com results they are much more represented..

I actually use this ranking reports on mikes-marketing-tools the most. I would place the URL, but I don't have a high enough post count.

It reports the position across a few search engine for the URL and keyword chosen.

thanks for that , I checked again using this method and i'm on page one again :)

Of course!! I totally forgot that I had MS searching for world results when I was targeting the USA! D'oh! I'm back on the first page of google for US targeting traffic :)

Thanks

Yeah, I was thinking about this yesterday.. I have a amazon products search at number 3 and that takes up loads of space so I doubt 99% of people will look past the amazon search ...Need to beat that..

Download and install Firefox addon Google Global , and you can see how you rank on Google in different countries - with using any proxies.

Use scroogle scraper to check (it pulls non-personalised SERPs from Google).

But note you can only find scroogle if you search on Yahoo, as Google has deindexed them for scraping their SERPs!
