    Hey Everyone,

I recently had the opportunity of seeing a competitor's SEO proposal and was amazed at what I saw. Some of the graphs and projections were utter bullshit. This is a very well respected SEO/Advertising agency with 200+ employees. One graph had the historical ranking positions of the prospected client's competitors. I imagine it has got to be pretty easy to convince a prospect client they should be doing SEO when you can show them their competitors are and for how long they've been doing it. It shows the prospect how far behind they are. Does anyone know how they are getting ranking positions from 6 years ago until now? How would that even be possible? I doubt an internal tool could do this, but possibly. This specific agency has been in business for 13+ years.

Also, here are a few of the other things on the proposal:
    • Ranking positions of some commercial and brand keywords
    • Yearly (not monthly) searches for some commercial keywords. This one really pissed me off because they are 1) displaying as yearly which pisses me off because I should have thought of that and 2) because the broad Search values are inflated by 3 times when compared to the AdWords Keyword tool.
    • A snapshot of spyfu information
    • An in-depth competitor analysis

Yeah man, tons of companies are out there like that, especially ones that sell SEO. People know so little about it, that all the BS projections and crap like that actually seem to make total sense somehow.

I call smoke and mirrors on these guys. Kudos for doing it, that's blackhat marketing at it's best! I mean who's going to call them out on it. Or they could be doing some VERY loose extrapolation of data. Again, who's going to prove them wrong.

Right and I can't do anything about it because technically I probably wasn't suppose to see that proposal lol. Crazy though. These guys speak at SMX, Link Love, all the big ones. This isn't even blackhat. This is straight up lying. Its got to be illegal on many levels.
