I was wondering whether it's seen as bad by Google etc if you place bold tags around your keywords, but make them appear as normal text to the human reader through CSS?

I was going to place bold tags around all my keywords, but a human would think the pages look strange when they are in bold text at inappropriate times.

    For example:

If you are interested in trying viagra, then getting viagra online is often your best option.

Would appear to a human visitor as:

If you are interested in trying viagra, then getting viagra online is often your best option.

    Is doing such a thing a 'no-no'?

Anytime you are showing one thing to Google and another to your visitors you are taking a chance. That is one thing Google really dislikes. Can you get away with it? Probably, but the risk reward for something like that seems pretty steep to me.

Personally I would try using a font where the bold did not show up as much.

I would tend to agree with volund, here. Although the bold may look out of place, keep in mind that it's largely a figment of your own perception. You KNOW that it's not formatted how you want it to be, and so, naturally, you dislike it. To your viewers, I would wager that it doesn't have all that much of an effect. If you think it does, though, just go with volund's suggestion and find a font that's a little more subtle on the strong tags.
