I've had a couple of family friends asking me to remake their website. Their sites both have a PR of 2. I asked them if I could put a hidden link on their websites linking to my page (and briefly explained SEO and how none of the website visitors would see the link and it would benefit me) - they were both okay with it. So this is what I did over 2 months ago and haven't been penalized yet. I want to know what you guys think. Is it a bad idea? I'm definitely getting the link juice from it, right?

I don't want to type out an anchor to my website because it has nothing to do with their website and would just be totally random and I don't want to do that to them. Basically I just make the image a small square and the same color as the website background and just stick it in there like so:

I think you already answered your questions.

Well will it be penalized eventually? I'm asking if Google would ever catch this and if so, how?

You have only two of those type of links, right? I doubt that will be enough to come to a conclusion.

Yes but the reason I'm asking is that I'm continuing to remake websites over time so I want to know if it's a bad idea to continue doing this. I have 3 other websites I've made all with decent PRs and I'm considering asking those people as well - but I want to see if it's a bad idea or not first

I believe that this activity can potentially and very likely will eventually lead to a penalty for both your site and the sites supplying the OBL.
Full disclosure: I've never actually taken part in anything like that. My experiences are second-hand, but those who told me what happened to them were quite sure.

Those people told you the same method I'm using or something similar?

Yeah it was pretty much the same exact thing. Not sure if the content of the sites was related or not, but I imagine that there would be no benefit to it being unrelated.

I've never tried this, but I remember reading an SEO book like 5 years ago that said not to do this as Google will know and penalize you. People used to basically make a page with literally thousands of auto-created keyword combinations for their niche and then "hide" them with a white font color, and then throw an image on the page to make it look like it was just a a page with an image. Google caught on and started penalizing for it. I wouldn't try it, it's a really old trick and probably not one that will be effective in the long run.

Two hidden links aren't a big deal. But if you keep on doing, your website will definitely be penalized. So either make them visible or remove them completely.
They compare the background color code of the site with anchor text color and if both are same color code used in the style sheet or html , you get penalized.

A few of the above replies didn't read you OP correctly and are referring to same colour as BG text links - which is definately a big no-no, and has been since about 2002. What you're doing is different as it's an image link, not a text link. On a small scale I wouldn't be too worried, and if anything it may help your link diversity a bit having a few more image links. I wouldn't go to hard with it though.
