I've had some great success with my web design business since going into offline marketing, and I'm going to share with you an EASY method of how to do this yourself without NO HARD SELLING. You simply need to create a local business directory that targets your town or city and get all the local companies to list on it.

You can create some cheap business cards or letters and set off visiting as many businesses as you can find in your area offering them a free listing for 1 yr.

Give them a card with the url to your newly created local biz directory or even take your laptop with you and offer to add their listing yourself. By giving them something for free, you can then advertise your services to them in the backend by either autoresponder messages or banners placed around the directory linking to your web design site. You can also post free tips using articles or videos on how to go about marketing their business online.

Another revenue builder is also giving them the option to sign up as a featured business where their listing goes top of search results for a small fee. All you need to do is some basic SEO work on the site to get ranked on the 1st page.

It's best to offer extras that no other business directory can offer such as mobile optimized listings or even have the business directory put into Facebook as an app...not many directories offer this and you'll stand out. I set my directories up so that when a business adds a listing or updates a listing, it sends out a special offer email telling them that we're offering a custom built 5-6 page website for a limited time price. You'll be surprised how many companies take you up on these offers.

An example of a Facebook business directory can be seen here:

Thanks buddy! Another thing i forgot to mention is that you can manually add say 10 local business to the directory before you go out to promote it, that way you're not dealing with an empty business directory from the offset. Just grab the businesses info from Google places!

You know Nathian, I heard about this strategy a while back and instead of sharing it with others on this great forum like you have, I just kept it to myself and actually forgot about it.

With all the new search algo changes and people freaking out, we really should help each other out again like the good ol days of bhw and not worry so much about others taking our ideas and making them irrelevant.

    Good job man, rep given.

Great post. One more thing. If you can find the local/neighborhood offline journal and add them as well, suddenly you have a neighborhood directory and you can strengthen look, in fact you have a good case to get every offline (and online) business linked to your directory and even paying to be on it!

Nathian, do you use a script of some sort? Or do you have a custom one?

Wow nathian, I sure wish I found this sooner... Finding a script, theme, etc. that work without spending a fortune has been my challenge. I love the idea of tying into Facebook! What themes are people using?

I haven't tried this approach at all, but given that we're starting to sell a lot more local business on our managed blogging and content development services, I'll give it a shot.

    Thanks for the tip!

I'd also point out that this type of thing is VERY easy to market using Places Scout or a similar Google Places scraper. Think about it - these people have already gotten their business on Places, so they're very likely to be down with listing in a directory as well.

I used the Canvas theme from woothemes and formidable pro to create the submission form. Then put it all together and created an instant install using wptwin. You can see it in action here:

    http://www.wpdirectoryplugin.com

This gives me a directory that works inside Facebook and on mobile, aswell as allowing me to sell featured listings thru PayPal.

Does anyone know of a business directory script that actually looks good? I've had a look but they all look like they are from the 90s.

    What do you use Nathian?
