    Just a question as EVERYONE I meet has the EXACT SAME last name. Patel . I do not understand why they all have the same last name. This confuses me as if I would have ran into some others with different last names I would not be so confused.

    Everyone in my town that is from india last name is PATEL . I asked one why the hell are you ALL named Patel they said something I could not understand and said that THEY where the original everyone else is fake. Now this has me even more puzzled.

    Why would someone want to fake who they are related to?

    I know someone can clear up this mystery.

    I heard it's something to do with trades of ancestors or something like, i apologise if I am wrong, but someone once told me for example, if your last name is Singh then you were from a farming background and so an so, like I said correct me if I am wrong it was just something I was told a long time ago.

    umm u are correct on that...!

    there are different sections in hindu society.. they carry a different last name according to the category they belong...

    in old indian times everybody followed what they ancestors did... like lets say ur dad was a goldsmith.. so ur son will also do the same thing.. and so will his son n so will his son...

    so they gave u a particular last name.. that was passed on from generation to generation!

    the last name also tells about the area from which the guy is from.

    indian society is complicated...! and i know all this coz i have indian background... my blood line is actually indian.. born n bred here... but still i know some stuff...!

    and singh represents a totally different religion... singhs are surds.. they are not hindus..! complicated but i hope i cleared ur doubts...

    and patels as far as i know are from the area near mumbai.. not sure what they are suppose to do..

    dont ask too many questions or i would have to ask my dad... lol!

    Singh was an aryan tribe called the Jat before the Indian Vedic Period, later they got divided into Muslim [now called pathans] hindus [called hindu jat] and Sikhs or Sardars [Surds?] called Punjabi Jat! I am a Jat myself and i have gone through texts on Jats that existed before... emmmm... Jesus was born! Surprisingly, these texts say that Jats were made from Shiva's hair. {God Of destruction}

    As for Patels they belonged to welathy merchant families of Gujarat, when the British Empire colonised India, the welathy classes were influenced by british Ideas and went overseas to get education, and then some of these were the first people to setlle overseas. Thats is why you see so many Patels!:)

    Well to correct you here, Singh was a name given by Guru Gobind Singh and is no way symbolic of someones ancestral occupation. Singh was originally for the Jats living near the banks of river saraswati [now dried up!]

    As far as it is concerned, Singh's were farmers and warriors at same time, just like romans.:)
