    So, I was walking home today when this guy asked me for a light. I gave him a light, then started walking. He happened to be going the same direction, so we talked while we walked. I found out that the guy was homeless, and an ex-felon. He had lost his job and his apartment back in July. I told him to keep his head up and keep faith in god, and don't let his situation land him back in prison. We had a long christian talk, and I really felt that the conversation was going well. As we got to the point where it was time for me to branch off, I told him that I would pray for him and he said thanks. I then reached into my pocket and pulled out about $2 in change and gave it to him. He was very reluctant, but I refused to take no for an answer. We stood infront of the store and talked a little more, and I really didn't feel that it was right that I only gave him $2 (even though he didn't ask for anything), so I reached back in my pocket. I had a 5 dollar bill and two 1 dollar bills left, so I gave him the $2. Once again, he reluctantly accepted, but this time he gave me that look like, why are you doing this for me?... He asked if I wanted to go in the 7-11 with him, and I said sure. He got a drink, then he got a hot dog, and something told me to just buy it for him, so I did. I took my last $5 and paid for it, then I gave him the $3 that was left. After that, we spoke for another few minutes before I had to go home. I could tell that he was very appreciative, but even more, I could tell that he was motivated to also do good and help others. My job was done :)

    You know what would be funny if he broke in your house tonight and robbed you.:p
    Just kidding, some times I feel good when I help people because you see that it makes them happy.

    Personally, it makes me feel really good. I know sometimes that even $1 is a lot for some people. And when I see those people, I appreciate my life and my "luck" more. I could have been one of them as well.

    It's not a rare situation that people in my country ask you for money, and it always feels good to help them a bit. It can mean a lot for them.

    There is no better feeling in the world than giving.

    The best though, is giving your last little bit...knowing you desperately need the money, and giving it away to someone that needs it more than you...
    When I first came to the states as a foreign student, I was broke 99% of the time and went several days without eating. But often enough id walk past a homeless person and give them all I had, most cases my one and only $20 that was supposed to last me a week or two, Knowing I have friends, family,education and health I'm still better of than them...

    Are you one of those ignorant people that think every homeless person has a drug habit and will spend every dollar they get on drugs?

    Yea, thats pretty much my situation the last few months. (You know part of that story), but like you, I knew that he needed it more than myself. It felt good to help.

    And as far as this comment, just to throw that speculation out the window, He was still walking, and we were about to part ways, I could tell he had absolutely no intention of asking for anything. Believe me, in the part of the city I live in, there is a ton of bums on every single corner, and every sidewalk and I know how to tell the difference between crack heads, drunks, and those who are just down on their luck. Hell, he didn't expect me to pay for his hotdog and drink in the 7-11 and give him 3 more dollars, but did he buy beer? No, he bought food, because that was what he needed. Because he really needed the help, and now he will pay it forward :)

    In Australia, they've done some some research, it was found that roughly these were the stats;

    Amount of people homeless;

    48% due to drug habits
    48% due to mental illness
    4% due to misc reasons such as bad business decisions.

    I'll give spare change, sometimes even $10 or $20 to those that don't show signs of drug use, I know that sounds strange and probably unfair, but I'd be guilty too of helping someone continue on with a bad choice in life.

    I can respect that. I won't give money to someone if I know they are going to use it for drugs, because I have 8 kids that could use that money alot more wisely. Then on the other hand, my kids do have what they need so if I see someone in need, and they are worse off than my family, then I will give my last like I did today. Well, it wasn't completely my last. I had a $2 lottery ticket in my pocket, and I used that to buy another one and won $5, so at the end of the day, I had $5 left :)

    I believe the correct term is "alturistic"...........................,

    Lending out a helping hand to other is what really makes us human. Surely, you cannot put a price tag on a happy face after helping someone out who deeply needs some help. I guess human happiness is tagged on helping others....the more you help out the happier you become! You feel me folks?

    When you help others, you get mind off your own problems, which usually you can't solve with same boxed thinking. I have plenty of moments where I helped someone else and then my mind thought how to solve my own problem differently. I usually help people but found that many people return with cold shoulder, I got used to that and I don't expect anything in return. But being lonely I do feel like that people should be appreciative to each other.
