    Hello,
I work for a company which manufacture goods to customers in my local area, we are not a nation wide company and only have interest in reaching out to local people.

also because its a niche business, the highest volume keywords are only around 4,000/month.
currently we spend around £100/month for an external company to deal with our seo, recently the results have been getting worse and I'm not even sure what they seo company are doing. (I've looked on semrush and found only 6 back links)

I'm reaching out on here because I've never actually done white hat seo and I'm looking to at least take a more active participation in the seo, preferably i would like to take complete control of the seo.

so I'm hoping someone might be able to help me get atleast an idea on how whitehat seo works in 2017 for long term rankings.

Are backlinks still the most important thing in 2017?
if so whats the best way to get back links for a very small niche business?

    any help would be great

    sean

Yeah backlinks is always important for the site rankings.
You have to niche based quality links and good metrics backlinks to your site.
At the same time quantity is not important you have to build quality backlinks.
Concentrate on your keyword competition and build backlinks according to the keywords.
In the same time you concentrate on your On page method too.

Sounds like you would want to establish an outreach program and target some relevant sources for legit guest post opportunities if you're going white hat.
As mentioned quality of quantity maybe you can find a local publication.

Ensure all your on page is absolutely perfect, no reason not to.

That would be a good start.

Also maybe tripple check what the seo company has actually been doing, you mention results getting worse, is it possible they have created something spammy, check Ahrefs backlink profile along with Maj just to get a full picture of what is going on.

    Thanks for your reply.
to be completely honest, we have basically neglected the website to a certain degree.
as we don't sell anything directly off the website, its more geared towards giving the visitor information about our products etc.

I am now going to revamp the entire website to add higher quality content and also i'm creating 20-30 articles for a weekly blog.

regarding the backlinks, I'm really struggling to find websites which would even link to us..

    thanks for the reply

I can look into guest post but the biggest issue is that the niche is so small that the opportunities will be minimal.

Well i have plugged our website into semrush and found that over the past 3 months, the total amount of keywords ranking has gone from 300+ to around 150, also it appears that the position has decreased for the vast majority of them.
Also again using semrush the backlinks shows 6, whereas a couple months ago it was 7.. I'm not saying 1 back link is whats making the difference, but i would have assumed to have seen alot more backlinks.

using semrush i did notice around jan 2016, there was a massive increase in keywords being ranked for, it shows it went from around 20-30 keywords, to 150+ keywords. any ideas what they did to do that? (i'm assuming they just indexed our website somehow with google?)

For a local business the best 2 type of sites to look at for links are:

    1) Local area relevant - any sort of site that caters only to the area you wish to target.
    2) Niche relevant - any site that caters to the niche of the business.

So say you are a plumber based in London, you want London relevant sites such as local directories, local newspapers, visitors guides etc etc as well as any site that has anything to do with plumbing.

No, in local SEO they are definitely not. If your doing local seo, your priority should be local business listings as well as mentions in local newspaper. Basically a 360° view, in G business directory, will bring you far better results compared to backlinks.
