I've read about Facebook for months now and have decided to try to use it to help a local business. I read about a "method" where you follow a lot of people to your FB account, then unfollow them a few days later (but they don't unfollow you). This seems do-able to me. There's some kind of automatic software needed to do this, and I don't remember what it is.

Does this really work? How? How do you find people to add? Is it automatic? This is a local business, and the thing that finally provoked me into action was that I could simply search for any FB account that had <cityname> in it, and it would have a very high likelyhood of being relevent/appropriate to the local business. Any help appreciated. This is my 1st time trying to put FB to work.

    Nigel,

This sounds more like a strategy used for Twitter. While you can like other pages with your business or personal profile on Facebook, people don't behave in the same way as they do on Twitter by following you back. Of course they may like your business page or connect with your personal account but this is more likely to happen on twitter.

Not sure about the script for FB but Tweet Attacks does what you are talking about for Twitter except its gone now. You could try Tweet Demon,

You should note (and while others may not agree), you need to be careful using this if you are working with an account that you plan on building up legitimately. If you are in it for the long term, I would recommend other methods for getting followers without third party software.
    Hope that helps you,

    Shawn

Thanks Shawn. I have a Twitter account for the business as well, but no one uses it. The FB account is more active, with some real users, so if I started doing black/greyhat marketing methods with it, the real users would make it look more real, vs. the twitter account which would look 100% fake. Not sure if that matters.

What can I do with this FB account? I see people offering likes, followers, etc... all the time so I assume there's something constructive to be done, but I can't see how any of it results in increased income for the business? Is there a compelling reason to focus on either Twitter or FB over the other? This is a small, local business. Everyone talks about social media being the "big deal", but I can't see how it actually turns into money.
