My trend Micro was expiring so I put Avast on there and I installed in compatible mode. I wanted to run the boot time scan and see if there was anything hidden on there. (I have done that with paid Norton and found some) BEFORE I paid for Trend Micro as I was only on a trial of TM.

When I installed everything was fine for a minute and working and then it froze up on me. I thought I may have just been doing to much and I came back to it 3 hours later and it was STILL frozen!

I had to just crash shutdown. Then it came back on and I thought all was okay and it was working fine for 5 min or less and then freeze again.

I have repeated the process multiple times - 5 or so - of crash shutdown and work for 5 min and then freeze again.

When it starts I get the windows did not shut down properly prompt with safe mode options but the thing is I cant run it in safe mode because the keyboard doesn't work, so I can't navigate to it. However, the keyboard works when windows starts and I get into the login screen.

I have then also tried to NOT login and just shutdown AND restart in which case I do NOT get the 'windows did not shut down properly screen' and yet I STILL have the same problem.

I have tried to start the uninstall process of Avast but it isn't fast enough because again it freezes in 5 min or less.

The mouse is working on screen but I cant do anything else! No task manager-NOTHING!

The computer is 6 months old, 500 GB HD and 3GB with a really good processor and was working flawlessly before this.

I did it in compatable mode so it should have worked with both anti virus programs. I did it literally a week ago on a computer with LESS specs and NOT in compatible mode with zero problems. It was Avast and Norton though.

    Hopefully someone can help me.

    Thanks Guys

Have you tried booting into safe-mode and uninstalling? If not, follow the instructions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Once in safe-mode uninstall the program and reboot.

Additional Tip: There's really no need to run two anti-virus applications at the same time.

EDIT: Just re-read and saw you're having problems using the keyboard when trying to get into safe mode. Can you confirm the keyboard works when you open the BIOS at bootup? Is the keyboard connected via PS-2 or USB?

Hey man thanks for taking the time to respond. I really appreciate it.

Yeah, I know you only need one anti virus, like I said TM was expiring and before I paid for a renew (free Trial) I wanted to run the boot time scan with Avast, because it can scan behind windows and pick up hidden nasties. I did it with Norton and it found things that Norton didn't. I was literally going to uninstall TM as it froze on me.

Yeah I can use the keyboard with BIOS. Well it looks like BIOS only a little different, there was no F8/F12 before windows only there is a Compaq prompt to press ESC. It just looks a little different then BIOS. But I never used it on this computer.

Keyboard works. I went into Diagnostics (F2 I think) Everything looked okay.

Do you know how to remove a program from BIOS?

    Keyboard is USB.

Can you check if "USB Legacy support" or "USB Keyboard Support" is enabled in the BIOS? If not, make sure it is enabled.

Just to clarify: During the boot process when you hold F8 does it load the safe-mode booting options? Are you then unable to press up and down to choose the options?

It looks different then any BIOS I have seen. Did BIOS change and I NOT get the memo?

I have attached a PIC of what screen I see. Before this screen I see a Compaq Presario screen and at the bottom is the option to press ESC. Whereas I was familiar with BIOS on Win 7 & Win XP giving the F8 and/or F12 options.
I press ESC. and the screen I get is the PIC I attached...

I tried all the options to look for "USB Legacy support" or "USB Keyboard Support" and I don't find anything.

I also played around in the menus but couldn't get anything.

I think the time I tried network boot it gave me this screen:

That was the first time I got that driver error upon start up.
But then it still froze up when I tried to go through the prompt.

No, holding F8 does NOT give me safe mode options.

The only time I see safe mode options is when it freezes up and I have to crash boot by holding down the power button on the PC. But I am unable to use the keyboard to navigate to run and safe mode, therefore the countdown expires and Windows starts normally.

Holding F12 (network boot PIC #1) gives me black screen with patent info then it says Client Mac Addr... ##### ect.
and then DHCP... and is a rotating backslash.
then Exiting PXE Rom and Windows then starts.

Diagnostics says PASSED on all options.

System Restore (F2) Give me the options:
    Microsoft System Restore
    Microsoft setup Repair tool
    system recovery

    Thanks again Golden Gloves

At this point, I'd recommend running Microsoft System Restore. Check for a system snapshot that date's back to before you started to experience this problem. Once you roll back, you'll be able to uninstall Trend Micro first then install Avast.

It's still odd you can use F2 to open the system restore options and navigate the BIOS but F8 does not work.

    Keep me posted.
