    Hi,
    I am updating my website and removing like 120 (theme1, theme2, theme3 etc) pages. I want to know how to re-direct all pages to a offer/discount or my home page.
    I also want to know whether it's dangerous (SEO/Google wise) or not to remove that many pages from a website.

    EDITED:
    1. I want to re-direct all those links to a offer page (KWs in those pages are getting traffic from Google)
    2. I want to remove all those pages from my website.
    3. Is it possible to do this without losing ranking (or a major loss in ranking)?

    You can add noindex tag to all pages so that your content won't be indexed in google searches once google bot visits your website the next time.Or you can set restrictions to all pages in robots.txt file like this

    user-agent : googlebot
    Disallow : /dir

    or to speed up the process remove url's from webmaster tools.

    if you want to redirect users to other site or offer
    you can modify htaccess file and forward all the visitors to some other sites
    dangerous or not in any case you will loose ranking

    To permanently redirect a webpage do 301 redirect. Put this code on your redirecting page (old page)
    <?php
    // PHP permanent URL redirect
    header("HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently");
    header("Location: http://www.mydomain.com/new_page.html");
    exit();
    ?>

    YES it strongly affect your search engine rankings.

    I want to remove all those pages from my website and then re-direct the incoming traffic to a single offer/discount page instead of adding no-index attribute to those pages.
    If I'll use Webmaster tools I'll loose the re-direction thingy?

    How to add a wildcard re-direction via htaccess?
    I'll loose ranking of the KWs in those (theme) pages? OR it'll affect all KWs ranking throughout the site?

    I don't want to use those pages anymore on my website so I planned to remove them.

    Do the pages you are about to delete has any special keywords to identify? Like if the pages are theme1, theme2 etc, they can be identified by checking if there is a word "theme" in the url.

    If you can let me know about that, I will write you a php script that you can put into the site header.

    Permalink of all those pages are /theme/detail/*

    PHP:
    <?php
    $url
    $_server['REQUEST_URI'];
    $needle "/theme/detail/";
    if (
    strpos($url,$needle) !== FALSE) {
    header("HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently");
    header("Location: new full url here ");
    }
    ?>
    Just place it in your site header and you are good to go. Make sure you test it though. This is pretty flexible. You can constraint the redirection based on user agent, referrer and what not.

    I really appreciate your offer but I want to learn/know how this is done. I am really thankful if you could tell me how this is done.

    Thank you for the script. I am using WordPress on that site. Can I add this script in my theme's header.php file?

    Yes. You can put it in the header file. Better put it at the start of the header so you wont break your site because of the php tags. Let me know if it isnt working.
